Screen Time shows inflated usage with unexplained grey bars

Can we talk screen time.

I’ve searched several times to find the answer I’m looking for but can’t find it. As you can see in the picture there are many grey bars that count toward my screen time use. I can assure you I haven’t been on the phone for 11+hrs. The grey bars from 12am to 6 I was sleeping. The only application use was the alarm clock. So what are those few bars and how can I get a more accurate reading of my screen time?

Your Screen Time is showing inflated grey bars because it may be counting activity from other devices or background system processes. Use the steps below to correct it and get accurate readings.

  • Open Settings ➔ Screen Time ➔ See All Activity and check which device is being measured. If multiple devices share your Apple ID, Screen Time will combine usage and create long grey bars.
  • Tap Devices (top right) and select This iPhone only to remove usage coming from other devices.
  • Open Settings ➔ Screen Time ➔ Share Across Devices and turn this OFF. Restart the iPhone to force Screen Time to recalculate locally.
  • Open Settings ➔ Battery and compare the timeline. If Battery shows no activity during those hours, the grey bars are background system processes, not actual screen use.
  • Open Settings ➔ Privacy & Security ➔ Analytics & Improvements ➔ Analytics Data and check for repeated logs. Heavy system logging after an update can inflate grey bars.
  • If the grey bars continue during sleep hours, reset Screen Time data: Settings ➔ Screen Time ➔ Turn Off Screen Time, restart, then turn it back on.

Thanks Alex , your second point DEVICES , I can’t find where this is. Do you have a screen shot or more instructions?

I’ve done point 3 and 6 nothing changed.

I’ve checked the phones attached to my family account - there is no usage on their phones during sleeping hours.

my battery also shows lots of grey bars during non use hours.

none of this is new to my phone or previous phones screen time has always show usage during off hours.
