How to restore an eMac

Apple released several models of eMacs between April 2002 and May 2005.

If there isn't a working operating system on that machine, you're going to need one of the optical restore discs that shipped with it, a bootable backup drive, or a retail operating system disc that's compatible with that particular Mac. These are long-discontinued, but you might be able to find some on electronic marketplace sites.

You may want to download MacTracker to your current Mac, and use it to help identify which versions of Mac OS 9, and/or Mac OS X, are compatible with that old PowerPC-based machine.

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is long obsolete and unsupported. It hasn't seen an update in almost twenty (!) years.

Therefore there is no browser that it can run that has the necessary awareness of modern internet security protocols to access today's secure internet web sites.

You might use it for personal productivity IF you already have the applications you'd like to use. There is nothing in today's market that will run on that hardware. If you already have a word processor for that OS, you might still use it. Or a spreadsheet. There likely is no email service that can be accommodated. If you wish to print anything, contemporary printers are unlikely to work so you'll need to already have a vintage printer or find one.

The Airport Extreme might still function to create a local network, but as with the eMac and the old OS, it may be lacking in the necessary security to connect to the internet through your provider.

What is it you hope to do with this old Mac?

It might make a nice hobby machine or piece of vintage decor or conversation piece.

There were 2 versions of the card. One supported 802.11b the other 802.11b/g. It should connect to most routers but the OP needs to determine which version card works with the eMac in hand. This thread should help answer that question.

The eMac also has a wired 100BaseT ethernet port.

So, yes, if the eMac operates it "can" connect to a local network. But connecting to the internet is all but impossible. I can personally verify this, as I tried with my own eMac a few months ago before I disassembled and recycled it.

I don’t know offhand if that AurPort Extreme card is compatible with whatever eMac you have.

Howevsr, the operating systems that eMacs can run are so old that you will probably find it difficult or impossible to find Web browsers that can handle connections to modern https sites.

Also, the AirPort Extreme card is so old that I doubt if it supports current Wi-Fi security standards.
