How to permanently uninstall Google Updater from iMac?

Mark Tatti. iMac 24 M3 Tahoe 26.3 purchased 10/24.

Started getting pop-up asking to open 'google updater'. I don't use google or chrome anymore so I uninstalled Chrome and I don't think I have any other google programs but pop-up still kept coming back. I turned it off in settings, Login Items & Extensions so it doesn't come back now. But how do I uninstall this app permanently from my iMac?

I should also mention that I emptied the Trash and restarted after uninstalling Chrome.

You likely mistyped something. To access the items in the hidden library folder within your home user folder, you can just click on the Finder's "Go" menu & press the Option key which will reveal the hidden "~/Library" folder. Select that folder from the list & Finder will take you there. It is now just a matter of manually navigating to respective subfolders.

For the other two in my list, you can click the Finder's "Go" menu and select "Computer" from the list. Select the "Macintosh HD" volume (default name, or select whatever name you may have given it). Manually navigate to the Library folder shown on the right pane, then to the "LaunchAgents" & "LaunchDaemons" folders.

Unfortunately Google doesn't provide a proper uninstaller and Google's manual instructions don't even mention the multiple low level items that remain "active".

Here is Google's uninstall instructions which are incomplete:

The other items will be located in the following folders:

~/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons

If all else fails give this a try:  Use the shareware app Find Any File to search for any files with a particular file name.  For Google software you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains google

Any files that are found can be Option dragged from the search results window to the Desktop to get a copy of the file.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

If you get the notification that a file is being used by an app and can't be deleted boot into Safe Mode and delete from there.

Note:  if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode.  This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will assure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Nobody mentioned a control key. And, there are Google files without the name "Google" in them, so searching for them by name won't help. Neither will "Malwarebytes" so you might as well uninstall it too.

To find the files in question navigate to each one of the folders HWTech provided. For example, to navigate to the

~/Library/LaunchAgents

... folder, copy and paste that fully qualified pathname into the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder... field.

Like so

... then

... and click the Go button. A Finder window will open, revealing that folder's contents.

Repeat for the other two folders.

Every item in each one of those folders should be for software you deliberately installed and want to keep using. Anything mysterious within them needs to be investigated. If you want to remove something it may be required to boot "Safe Mode" to do that: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

And it should just go without saying, don't do anything without a backup.

HWTech - I followed those instructions in the link above to remove Chrome but at step 6b I got a bit lost because I entered

~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome, then at 6c when I click Go (in the menu bar at the top of the page) nothing happens. I tried entering what you have above but still nothing happens. I'm not an expert at all on these computers and I don't understand how to launch these folders.

HWTech - Thank you for that info. I didn't know about the 'control' key. I followed you directions and took out a Google Chrome folder and an updater folder. Then for the other two I went to 'computer' like you said but the only items in those folders were for 'malwarebytes' which I don't want to remove. I emptied the trash and restarted but when I went to Login Items & Extensions in settings Google LLC is still there. It says 1-item under Google LLC. Is this just destined to stay there, I have the button to the right turned to the off position as I've said in my original post?
