Apple Watch setup requires unknown passcode

My son gave me his old watch but I can’t set it up. It wants a passcode that he doesn’t know. He unpaired it from his phone but I still can’t set it up. Help please. It is a series 4

He didn't unpair it properly. Sorry. Get him to remove it from his account in iPhone, Settings, [tap his name], list of devices.

It might be that you need his Apple ID password to release it from his account and make it available for you to set it up with your Apple ID.

Or, it might just be the passcode for the watch (similar to how you have a passcode for an iPhone).

We can't tell which it is because you haven't provided any context for how it is requesting a passcode.
