iPhone 13 incoming calls go to voicemail or auto-connect

I’m writing this on behalf of my 90 year old father. He is using my old iPhone 13. It has recently developed an issue with incoming calls. It has the lastest iOS update.

The issue started that it would announce the caller but then go directly to voicemail. At first it only did that randomly, but eventually it was every incoming call.

I got him to turn the voicemail off to see if it would ring normally, but instead it is now not ringing at all but automatically connecting the caller without him actually answering the call. Even after turning the voicemail back on, it will now either go directly to voicemail after the caller has been announced, or just connect the call automatically.

I’m trying to help him through messages and on Zoom as I’m overseas. I have googled the issue extensively, walked him through every suggested fix I can find, he’s phoned his carrier to get help and they can’t really understand the issue that it automatically answers the call without ringing.

I’m totally at a loss and it’s rendered the phone quite useless as unless you have the phone in your hand when it announces the call as you don’t know there is a call and the caller doesn’t know what’s happening because they just hears nothing the other end as it’s connected but no one there to say hello.

Any help much appreciated.

Incoming calls can skip the ring or auto‑connect when certain call‑handling settings are active on the iPhone 13.

1. Open Settings ➡️ Accessibility ➡️ Touch ➡️ Call Audio Routing ➡️ set to Automatic.

2. Open Settings ➡️ Accessibility ➡️ Voice Control ➡️ Set this to OFF.

3. Open Settings ➡️ Apps ➡️ Phone ➡️ Silence Unknown Callers ➡️ Set this to OFF.

4. Open Settings ➡️ Apps ➡️ Phone ➡️ Call Forwarding ➡️ Set this to OFF.

5. Open Settings ➡️ Apps ➡️ Phone ➡️ Wi‑Fi Calling ➡️ turn OFF temporarily.

6. Open Settings ➡️ Focus ➡️ check Do Not Disturb and all other Focus modes for Allow Calls From settings.

7. Restart the iPhone to reload call‑handling services.

This stops the phone from auto‑connecting calls, skipping the ring, or sending calls straight to voicemail.

When your father receives a call, does he hear any ring before it connects, or does it connect instantly with silence on his end?

I was going to ask you to contact 👉 Official Apple Support however, you are overseas and the iPhone is with your dad.

I believe the best resolution, at this point, would be to have someone else get the iPhone examined at the Apple Store 👉 Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options or at an Authorized Service Center for further diagnosis and evaluation.

Thanks for the suggestions Axel, we have tried all those and some. When he receives a call the announcement (he has Announce Calls on, we have also tried with it off) of who’s calling starts but is sometimes cut off as the call connects. If the Announce Calls is off it doesn’t ring at all and automatically connects.

Silence on his end.
