Will I be able to buy the M5 Max MacBook Pro in store or should I pre order it now?

Will I be able to buy the M5 Max MacBook Pro in store or will I have to order it online? I would like to know if I should get it in store on launch day or if they wont have it and I should pre order it now.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 26.3

The store is going to stock limited numbers of what they think is going to FLY out the door in large numbers. And in the unlikely event a model lingers, it is not an unusual or expensive model to carry until it sells.

[in my opinion] that would be at the base configuration, NOT the [somewhat more specialized] Max model.

My recommendation:

If you know what you want, order it now. They all come from the same factory. I find it unlikely you will be able to get what you want at any store on release-day.

I tried the apple online configurator, it said the model was "z1n2" which indicates a custom configuration. Will they have it in store?

You can get what you want and on a delivery schedule from Apple, or you can trust to luck with what might be available in store and then be left to decide if you either want to wait (and quite possibly longer) for the configuration you really want, or if you will decide to accept what Apple has in stock.

You know yourself here best of course, and exactly none of us here has access to or insight into the Apple stocking and order plans and the Apple fulfillment systems.

TL;DR: Are you feeling lucky? Willing to wing it? Or do you want what you want?

My advice: if you want anything but the base configuration, configure it to your specifications on the Apple Store and buy it.

You can put your order in on a Sunday afternoon and it could be on your desk Wednesday. That may not be so until after the initial demand wanes, but Apple retail stores are only going to receive Macs in configurations they know will move quickly (i.e. cheap). Plenty of people do that, but then they come back here complaining that the $1000 Mac they bought a few years ago can't be upgraded.
