AirPods Pro 2 audio distortion on iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS 26.x)

I’m experiencing a consistent audio distortion issue when using AirPods Pro 2 with my iPhone 17 Pro Max. The problem started immediately after upgrading from an iPhone 14 Pro Max and has persisted through multiple iOS updates.

Issue

When using AirPods Pro 2, audio becomes distorted and robotic, often higher pitched, especially when the microphone is active.

The issue is easiest to reproduce in PUBG Mobile when enabling the in-game microphone. As soon as the mic activates, the audio almost immediately becomes distorted. If the microphone is disabled, the distortion sometimes still appears after some time but much less frequently.

Environment

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iOS 26.x (currently latest available version)
  • AirPods Pro 2 (latest firmware)

Important observations

  • The exact same AirPods Pro 2 worked perfectly on my previous iPhone 14 Pro Max.
  • I tested two different pairs of AirPods Pro 2 and both behave the same.
  • I tested a different Bluetooth headset with the iPhone 17 Pro Max and did not experience any distortion.
  • This suggests the problem may specifically affect the combination of iPhone 17 Pro Max + AirPods Pro 2, particularly when microphone input is active.

Troubleshooting already performed

  • Re-paired AirPods multiple times
  • Reset network settings
  • Restarted the device
  • Full device erase via Settings
  • Full restore via Mac (clean iOS installation downloaded from Apple servers)
  • Restored backup afterward
  • Tested on both Wi-Fi and cellular networks
  • Confirmed AirPods firmware is up to date
  • Ran Apple remote diagnostics on both the AirPods and the iPhone
  • Visited an Apple Store where hardware diagnostics showed no faults

Apple Support suggested waiting for a software update because the issue appeared to be software related. However, several iOS updates have been released since then and the issue still persists.

Question

Is Apple aware of any compatibility or Bluetooth audio issues between iPhone 17 Pro models and AirPods Pro 2?

At this point I have ruled out:

  • AirPods hardware
  • Basic Bluetooth pairing issues
  • corrupted system software
  • general Bluetooth problems (since another headset works)

Any guidance or confirmation from Apple or other users experiencing the same behavior would be appreciated.

I haven’t seen Apple Inc. acknowledge a specific iPhone 17 + AirPods Pro (2nd generation) issue, but based on everything you tested, it really does sound like a software compatibility bug rather than hardware.

A few things stand out:

  • It happens on two different AirPods Pro 2 pairs, so unlikely to be the earbuds
  • Another Bluetooth headset works fine, so not general Bluetooth failure
  • It gets worse when mic activates, which points to the audio codec switching during two-way audio

That last part matters. When the mic turns on (calls/games/voice chat), Bluetooth switches into a lower-bandwidth mode for simultaneous input/output. If that handoff is bugged, you get the robotic/distorted audio you’re describing.

A couple extra things worth testing:

  • Turn off Personalized Spatial Audio and Head Tracked Spatial Audio
  • Disable Automatic Ear Detection temporarily
  • In PUBG, test with voice chat enabled but microphone permission denied for the app, just to isolate the trigger
  • Try the same mic-active test in another app like Discord or Voice Memos + monitoring

Since you already did a full clean restore and Apple diagnostics were clean, there’s not much left on your side. At this point it really looks like an iOS/Bluetooth stack issue specific to that combo.

If another app reproduces it when the mic kicks in too, that’s the strongest evidence for a system bug. Then it’s basically waiting for Apple to patch it.

I just got an iPhone 17 Pro and noticed distortion and clipping on both phone (hold music) and MS Teams, using my AirProds Pro 2, where even at a low volume, the audio was getting clipped.

BTW – the audio is otherwise "tinnier" than my iPhone 13 Pro, as I have them side-by-side and am playing the same things between both. idk if anyone else has noticed that -- but that's for another thread.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I have already performed multiple restarts, including a full restore via Mac with a clean iOS installation. The issue still persists and is reproducible every time when the microphone is enabled in PUBG Mobile.

No issues with other bluetooth earphones/headphones.

This does not appear to be a temporary system glitch.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I tested some of the things you mentioned.

I turned off Personalized Spatial Audio and Head Tracked Spatial Audio, but it made no difference. I also disabled Automatic Ear Detection temporarily, same result.

Regarding PUBG microphone permission: if I deny microphone permission for PUBG in iOS settings, the in-game mic cannot be enabled at all.

The important update is that I have now also experienced the same type of robotic/distorted audio in facetime calls and Snapchat calls. So it no longer seems to be exclusively PUBG Mobile. PUBG is simply the easiest app to reproduce it in because the issue happens almost immediately when the in-game mic is enabled.

So at this point it seems more like an iOS / AirPods Pro 2 / iPhone 17 Pro Max issue related to two-way Bluetooth audio, rather than a PUBG-specific issue.

What makes it confusing is that another brand Bluetooth headset works fine on the same iPhone, while two different pairs of AirPods Pro 2 both have the issue.

So I agree that it looks like a software compatibility bug in the Bluetooth/audio stack when the microphone is active. Unfortunately, several iOS updates have passed and it still has not been fixed.
