iPhone 17 Pro voice dictation issues

In November I switched from an iPhone 11 to the iPhone 17 Pro. Ever since that time the voice dictation has been horrible. I have to talk super slow otherwise it just creates a jumble of different words that I did not say. Has something happened to Apple’s dictation programming for the new phones?

Yes, the iPhone 17 Pro Speech to Text has become huge problem, jumbled words, complete inaccuracies, and the microphone stops dictating as soon as you pause. It won't start againg unless, you deselect the microphone then select it again. It has been a nightmare. It does not appeart that Apple has made any attempt to correct the issue. What I did was went to Setting>General>Keyboard>toggled off and on the Enable DIctation button. Then I went to Settings>Apple Intelligence and Siri>Apple Intelligence and turned it off. The problem is now solved. This should work until Apple decides to get around to fixing it

I suddenly had a problem with voice to text dictation. It had been fine. I used it extensively. I had can the two keyboards on for English and Spanish. I didn’t change anything as far as I know, but suddenly dictation didn’t work, crazy jumbled information.

I went back to just an English keyboard. Didn’t restart, didn’t do anything else and it’s working now. In fact, I am dictating as I speak. Who knows? 🫣

Are you suggesting that the iPhone 11’s dictation experience is superior to the iPhone 17 Pro’s AI‑powered dictation? Since the newer iPhones use on‑device AI for speech recognition while the iPhone 11 does not, are you implying that AI‑powered dictation is actually inferior?

Why the Confusion?

  • Perceived Inferiority: Some users feel older dictation was “simpler” and less error‑prone because it avoided complex AI features like auto‑punctuation or predictive corrections. This can create the impression that newer AI is “overthinking” speech.
  • Learning Curve: AI dictation adapts to user speech patterns over time. Early experiences may feel inconsistent until the model adjusts.
  • Edge Cases: In noisy environments or with strong accents, older cloud models sometimes performed comparably, since they leveraged massive server‑side datasets.

I have had nothing but problems when using dictation. Texting has become extremely tedious as I have to rely on dictation. It rarely works and it takes four times longer to do it; I end up typing anyway. I have tried several methods, talking slower or louder etc. The technology may be better than previously used prior to iPhone 17 Pro Max but operationally it is far from favorable. I feel that I’m a Guinea pig for AI documentation and data. I paid a lot of money for something that has been nothing but a huge stressor.

And you're telling us....why?

You should tell Apple:

Make sure you have the Apple Dictionary on in your settings and use Siri to text or send messages. With Dictation it is a voice and typing feature. You have to wait for the dictation prompt to appear in order to voice command the text. You should easily be able to switch between typing a voice dictation. It’s not an exact science it learns the words you use overtime. Also with dictation they have to send some information to your internet search engine so you can try switching your search engine for better use and results.

I appreciate the response. I have now found I am not alone in this belief that the newer system is severely lacking. I am not saying that the newer is not more advanced, but just because it’s more advanced does not mean it runs smoothly. I’ve had the phone since November and things have not improved. I am an English speaking and American born without an accent. My wife and I are both having the same problem, my sister and brother-in-law with their newer phones as well. Now I’m finding a lot of threads in different forums talking about the same issue. Between Apple forum, Reddit, and other journalistic articles, it seems there are thousands of people complaining about the same issue. I should not have to talk so slow in order for it to understand me. I have never had to do that with my old iphone. 🤷🏼‍♂️

He’s not “implying” anything. He’s reporting that his voice to text experience is significantly worse on iPhone 17 Pro. The reason I (and everyone else here) found this thread is because we are experiencing the same issue, and trying to figure it out. I am retired, but I did processor design for Intel and Hewlett-Packard, and I can tell you without reservation that sometimes advanced technologies will cause unexpected problems, especially when first rolled out. Based on what I have learned in this thread, I am disabling Apple Intelligence for now. I will see if that helps.

I bought an iPhone 17 Pro in March 2026. The problems with the dictation were immediate and drove me out of my mind. I was constantly having to redo all my texts and go back and fill in areas and replace words that made no sense. In May, I updated my software to version 26.5. My dictation worked great after that and all the issues were gone. I was so happy to have my phone in working order again!

Last week, my phone automatically updated overnight to 26.5.1 and now all the dictation issues are back again! The first morning it did it, I was wondering what happened because it had been doing great. I went into settings and checked for a software update, and sure enough it had done it the night before.😡 I’m really hoping another update is coming soon that will fix this once and for all.

I have actually very much loved the dictation, but in the past two weeks, it has been absolutely horrible when using it. I’m not sure what happened, but it seems to only be a problem at home, which makes no sense because I’m on our Wi-Fi. However, I’m typing this entire message with dictation, and it’s doing it with no problems, so I don’t get it.
