Sony DCR-TRV320 compatibility with iMac or MacBook Pro

If your Mac is running Tahoe, you will not be able to import digital video via FireWire (IEEE 1394, iLink) even if you have all of the proper adapters. Even if your Mac is running something earlier than Tahoe, you may find it hard or impossible to find the now-discontinued Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter.

In this case, you may need to purchase a USB video capture card and software, such as those designed to import video from VHS recorders, and import video from your camcorder's analog video and audio outputs. You will also need the A/V connecting cable that came with your camcorder, which brings out the analog signals on three RCA-style plugs (composite video, left & right audio – a common connection method back in the day).

There could be some quality loss going back out to analog signals and then redigitizing them, but the alternative might be to be unable to import the video at all.

This camera uses Firewire (IEEE 1394) (i.Link) to link to a computer for transferring videos. If your Mac is running macOS 26.3.1 Tahoe then Apple has discontinued support for Firewire and you will not be able to transfer content.

So let’s start by you telling us what model iMac or MacBook you have and what version of macOS they are running. If your Mac doesn’t have Firewire ports and is running macOS prior to Tahoe you may be able to connect with adapters.
