Notes app on Mac expands all folders by default on launch

Any time I open the Notes app on my Mac after Notes has been quit completely (either directly or by way of the Mac dying, restarting, or being turned off), It expands all of the folders by default. This behavior cannot be normal, right? I saw a few other posts like this that didn't go anywhere.

This is really making it inconvenient and ugly to use the Notes app - does anyone know a solution or a way to get this fixed in a future point update?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 26.3

Hi, and welcome to this Apple (user-to-usr) Community :-)

Re: "Notes app on Mac expands all folders by default on launch"

Am no expert in this area, yet I notice your post has received no replies so far.

(Am using an earlier version of Notes on my Mac, so settings are likely different.)

We can't guess what settings you have in place:

Perhaps Apple's article for MacOS 26: "View your notes in Notes on Mac" can help:

For more "how to" info: Apple provides useful documentation.

You can see a Table of Contents or use the "search" field from the welcome page

if you click the link: For MacOS Tahoe: Notes User Guide for Mac - Apple Support

For Feedback, bug-reports, feature requests: Apple provides a feedback website.

Eg: Here is the web-form for Mac Notes feedback:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/notes/

All the best :-)
