iPhone 16 Pro Max: USB-C charging fails, MagSafe hot

My iPhone 16 Pro Max is not charging with a USB-C charger provided by Apple and only works with a Magsafe charger, but gets hot even without the case, and sometimes does not charge even with the Magsafe due to the hot temperature.

When an iPhone is unable to charge by USB‑C but still charges via MagSafe, it usually means the USB‑C port isn’t making a stable connection. That can be caused by debris, a bent internal pin, liquid residue, or a failing charging circuit. The MagSafe coil heating up is a separate warning sign: the phone is detecting thermal stress and slowing or stopping charging to protect the battery. When MagSafe gets hot even without a case, that’s almost always a hardware issue inside the phone, not the charger.

1) What this usually means

• The USB‑C port may be damaged or failing internally

• The charging controller may be overheating and shutting down

• MagSafe heat indicates the battery or charging circuitry is under stress

• iOS will stop charging entirely if the phone crosses its thermal limit

2) What you should do next

• Try a second known‑good USB‑C cable and charger ➡️ if it still fails, the port is almost certainly damaged

Restart the phone and test again ➡️ if MagSafe still overheats, stop using it

• Schedule Apple diagnostics ➡️ they can check the port, battery, and charging circuit 👉 https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair

Sounds like it's time to schedule an appointment at your closest Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation and possible service options --> https://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
