Final Cut Pro purchased outright – why am I being asked for a subscription?

Final Cut Pro purchased outright – why am I being asked for a subscription?

I purchased Final Cut Pro from the Mac App Store on November 15, 2021 for $299.99, and I have the receipt confirming the full purchase. At the time of purchase, Final Cut Pro was sold as a one-time purchase with no subscription required.

Now after updating my Mac, I am seeing a message suggesting that I need to start a subscription (Creator Studio / $12.99 per month) in order to continue using professional creative tools.

This is very confusing and concerning. I already paid the full price for Final Cut Pro. I did not purchase a subscription product, and I should not be required to start one just to continue using software that I already bought.

Could someone please clarify:

  1. Is Final Cut Pro still a perpetual license for customers who already purchased it?
  2. Why am I being shown a subscription prompt after updating?
  3. Will my purchased version of Final Cut Pro continue to work without paying a monthly fee?

I would appreciate clarification from Apple, as this feels misleading for customers who already paid the full price for the software.

Thank you.

  1. The stand alone version with the perpetual license that you bought in 2021 is still valid and Apple has said that it will have feature parity with the Creator Studio version. You do not have to sign up for the Creator Studio version.
  2. Apple is trying to promote the product. I get the same prompt and find it intrusive. The only reason I see to get the CS version is if you need the premium content and AI features in the CS version.
  3. Yes it will.

What did you update on your Mac before the notice showed up?
