iPhone 17 Pro battery drain

New iPhone 17 Pro has been in use over a month. iOS 26.3.1. All this time the battery drain is enormous. Overnight when the phone is idle it consumes 10-30%. For ex., 11% drain overnight with no app activity at all, the screen time is only 3 minutes. 18% and 27% spent on Home&Lock Screen with 1 minute on screen. These are huge numbers. Does anyone know what’s consuming the battery as obviously it’s not any app and 1-3 minutes of Home&Lock Screen can’t consume that much?

Auto-brightness, background app refresh, most of location services and other battery consuming settings are off.

I’ve tried to set up the phone as new with the following iCloud sync, still the battery drain remains.

Apple Support ran a diagnostic test remotely and everything looked fine.

The battery life of  new 17 Pro is way worse than my old 84% capacity iPhone 13 pro.

You have been given some false information, the phone to phone transfer makes no difference. Indexing is performed after the update, but that lasts for about 4 or 5 days, certainly not a month later.

Battery drain will either come from the apps you have installed or if you are in a poor cellular service area showing 1 bar or less it will require significantly more power to maintain a connection to a distant tower. As for the apps you have installed, it has been seen that Meta apps are significant consumers of your battery and if you have one that is consuming a large percentage of your battery, removing it will solve your problem. Just a guess that you have one or more of those apps, since they are frequently seen to drain users batteries, even on Android phones where Google has called them out for their poor optimization on those devices.

Post the screenshot recommended from others at Settings > Battery > View all Usage that shows the 2 battery graphs and the top 5 apps consuming the battery.

As for changing, you should be using Optimized Charging and charge your phone all night, every night. There should never be a case where your phone is draining overnight because that is when it should be plugged in and when background processes are intended to run so they don't interfere with your daily usage.

10% to 30% is in the normal range for an iPhone that is not charged overnight. There is never a time when any smartphone is doing nothing. If you charge overnight, every night, with Optimized Charging enabled (the best practice) and you don’t need to charge until the next night your iPhone is working as designed. And charging overnight will also extend the useful life of your battery, as all of the “housekeeping” that the phone does overnight will be powered from the USB power source rather than the battery, thus reducing the number of charge cycles over the life of the battery.

Update to iOS 26.5.1.

The measure of battery health deterioration/drainage is subjective and can vary depending on individual usage patterns. There is no universal standard to determine whether the battery health deterioration/drainage is normal or abnormal because it heavily relies on how the battery is used and maintained.

To prolong the life of your iPhone battery, you can follow these tips and best practices:

  1. Optimize Battery Charging: Enable the "Optimized Battery Charging" feature on your iPhone. It helps reduce the wear on the battery by slowing down the battery aging process. You can find this option in Settings > Battery > Battery Health. About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone - Apple Support (IN)
  2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can negatively impact your battery life. Avoid exposing your iPhone to excessive heat or cold, such as leaving it in direct sunlight or in a freezing car.If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold – Apple Support (UK)
  3. Use Original Chargers and Cables: Always use Apple's original chargers and cables or certified third-party accessories. Low-quality chargers or cables can damage the battery and reduce its lifespan. Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories - Apple Support (IN)
  4. Avoid Draining the Battery to Zero: Charge it whenever the charge becomes lower than 20%. The rest is up to you when to charge. how long to charge, how often to charge, which adapter to use starting from 5W to 140W USB-C Power Adapter etc.
  5. Optimize Display Settings: Adjust your display settings to optimize battery life. Lower the screen brightness, enable auto-brightness, and use shorter screen timeout durations. Adjust the display and text size on iPhone - Apple Support (IN)
  6. Minimize Background App Refresh: Limit the number of apps allowed to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disable it for apps that don't require real-time updates. Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

There is no such thing as an idle phone. To get why you are trying to accomplish you would actually have to turn it off, and even then on startup you can expect a loss of battery percentage up to 5%. Over the 10 hours you posted in your screenshot, the battery usage is minimal and expected. You are still using power to connect to a cell tower and if you are connected to Wifi, that also takes power, not to mention the background housekeeping that occurs overnight. That is the ideal time to perform those activities where they are not being performed while you are using the device that may cause lag.

Do as Lawrence Finch suggested and quit using the Charge Limit and instead use Optimized Charge and charge your phone all night, every night. When on a regular schedule, you will be greeted with a phone that just recently was charged to 100% and should be enjoying all day battery life until you repeat the cycle and charge it again.

While I certainly appreciate your wizard beard zeal, the days of simple asessments, period, are over. Nevertheless, if it depends solely on what you say, and two phones have all the same apps, providers, and settings, but vary by OS and hardware versions, different results in battery life mean there's something different with the hardware or the OS.

With that said, I notice that 26.4.1 provides a lot less information about usage by app or process, like only two under "view all battery usage."; not sure when that changed, but it's annoying.

I will add that a hard reset often fixes it, and when that hasn't, an update has (and, Mr. Finch, notice that no apps, settings, provider, or even distance to router and tower, did not change, but performance did). The problem seems more pronounced on my 17 pro though.

Others are correct. You are wrong. Period.

The overnight usage is determined ENTIRELY by what you have installed on your iPhone, your signal strength, your notification settings, whether you receive email and text messages overnight, what apps update their data overnight. If you delete ALL of your 3rd party apps, disable mail and texts you can probably get down to 10% overnight or less.

But overnight energy usage is NORMAL, which is why Apple recommends charging overnight. If you don’t charge overnight all bets are off about energy usage. And NOT charging overnight actually reduces the useful life of the battery. Because most of the night after the battery reaches capacity charging stops and the phone uses line power, allowing the battery to “rest”, and thus reducing the number of charge cycles over the life of the iPhone.

There is no point in enabling Optimized Charging unless you charge overnight. And you were just lucky with the 13, most iPhones drain 10% to 30% overnight.

You should charge every day, preferably overnight, and not try to see how low you can get the battery before charging it. Letting it go below 20% routinely will shorten the useful life of the battery. And letting it go to zero before charging it will significantly shorten it.

From what you have posted, your iPhone 17 has only used about 70% of its battery in the heaviest usage day. At 12am your battery is only about 80% and if you used Optimized Charging and charged your phone overnight, it would start your day at a 100% charge and you would have the expected all day battery life.

There is no doubt that a cell signal at 1 bar is going to use more power to connect to a distant tower, but even considering that it does not appear to be excessive. The hourly graph over 10 hours operating on battery power overnight while idle appears to be normal to me.

Optimized Charging is only effective when you are charging on a regular schedule, which does not seem to be the case with what has been posted. My recommendation remains the same, charge your phone all night, every night and you will find the majority of the time charging will be on hold at 80% and you will actually be using less Charge Cycles and have all day battery life.

Despite what others have said, something is wrong. My previous phones have max 10% drain overnight. 10-30% is totally unreasonable for a phone that its manufacturer claims can do 30 hours. *Maybe* if its doing a major update from a distant cell tower while also updating spotlight. Here’s hoping its something Apple can and will fix with an update.

Experiencing the same problem on my new iPhone 17 which is just a few months old , it drain overnight and it even drains on normal broad day light sitting idle , it could be at 100 and in few hours you will come and meet it at 85 or sometimes 80 but my old degraded iPhone XR can sit idle for about 3 days untouched and it will still loose only 2 to 3 percent. Friends were saying it’s because I just did phone to phone transfer so it indexing but some month of use I guess by now the indexing should be done because I put it on charge overnight connected to my Wi-Fi. I think I waste a lot of money on trash and I am in Ghana and don’t know how to get into touch with apple to either do checks on the phone to see what’s actually wrong so I can get replacement or if it will be fixed, bought it from uk. I am still in my 1 year warranty period

Thanks for your replies!

Optimized charging is on.

And I understand that there is never a time when any smartphone is doing nothing.

But my old iPhone 13 Pro consumes 3-4% for the same overnight period with the same apps installed and settings. I still may use it for almost 1,5 days without charging whereas a new 100% battery in 17 pro that is supposed to be way better drains by the end of the day.

Hmmm it doesn’t just drain overnight, even during the day when sitting idle and not connected to data or Wi-Fi it’s still drain. One time I intentionally switched it off it was at 87 and I left it for about 3 hours switch it on and have it at 63 a device that was completely off oh how. My degraded iPhone XR can sit idle for 2 days and loose only 2 to 5 battery
