iPhone 17 Pro Max CarPlay audio dropouts/lag in BMW

Since switching to an iPhone 17 Pro Max, I’ve been experiencing an issue with CarPlay in my BMW 420 (iDrive 7). I’m using wireless CarPlay (as far as I know, this car doesn’t support a wired CarPlay connection).

While driving, I get very brief audio dropouts at random moments — whether I’m listening to music on Spotify or podcasts on YouTube. It sounds like there are communication interruptions with the head unit. I’ve also noticed slight lag at the same moments, for example when moving the map in Google Maps.

It’s extremely annoying, especially when listening to music. I didn’t have this issue on my iPhone 14 Pro Max.

I manage to record this issue. It can happen several times during one song:

Your iPhone 17's new Wi-Fi chip doesn't play nice with the Wi-Fi channel your BMW uses for wireless CarPlay. That's why the audio and map stutter at the same time — the connection blips for a split second.

Best fix: Use the BimmerCode app (~€30 plus a cheap OBD adapter) to change your car's 5GHz Wi-Fi channel from the factory default (channel 156) to "auto" or UNII-3. BMW owners with your exact problem say this basically eliminated the skipping.

Free things to try first:

  1. Update your iPhone to the latest iOS version
  2. Forget the car in your phone's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings, then re-pair CarPlay from scratch
  3. If you wear an Apple Watch, turn its Bluetooth off for one drive and see if the skips stop
  4. Delete the My BMW app and test

If nothing works, a modern wireless CarPlay adapter (like an Ottocast) is a reliable workaround — but try the channel change first, it's the fix that matches your problem best.

For the ones having a BMW with iDrive 7, music dropouts and have Bimmercode and a dongle, try the below steps.

I could fix/workaround it using Bimmercode by changing the below value, it was almost impossible to listen music before, so many dropouts every few seconds, after changing the below value the problem is gone (since multiple weeks now).

I want to point out the following fact:

Just because the issue can be resolved on BMW side doesn't mean that the issue is actually caused by BMW, older apple devices are all working fine, the problem started for me after changing to iPhone 17, none of the previous phones did had such issues.

These are the steps in Bimmercode:

Select Headunit (HU_MGU)

Select Expert Mode

CONNECTIVITY_A4A

WLAN_5GHZ_CHANNEL

set value unii_1_auto

You can also try going to your BMW dealer but i'm not sure if they will do this change based on your request.

For me it was working fine and i thought it's worth to mention it as there are more and more complaints about this.

Kind of obvious, but:

This change is made at your own risk and I can’t take responsibility for any issues, damage, or claims resulting from it

Quick update -

I took my car into the BMW dealer to update them on the issue. They told me they were aware of the audio skipping issues, there was a service notification for it, and they installed the latest software (03/2026.54) for me. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue though and they were unwilling to change the Bimmercode.

I ended up changing my Bimmercode based on the settings @rahone provided and that cut down on the issues by 95%. I'm still having some skipping, but it's more like 1 time every 45-60 minutes vs. 2-3 times per song. I use Amazon Music for audio streaming, so the remaining issues could be on Amazon's end. I tried listening to an Apple Podcast the other day and didn't experience any skipping in my 45ish minute drive.

I'm going to continue testing and will update here if I learn anything new.

it might not help but just want to highlight that my bmw 1 series 2023 with drive 7 head unit was replaced by a main dealer and i’ve since had no issues.

The software was updated to 03/2026.54 which i’ve since read in other threads that bmw have released a service note detailing carplay compatibility improvements with this update which may help those who can’t get a head unit replacement.

this tells me it is purely a bmw problem

I brought our 2023 BMW x5 to the dealer again, and they updated the software on the car to be the lastest version. My service advisor told me that based on his experience this fixes the issues 60% of the time. After that was completed, we picked up the car and the exact same issues occurred with my iPhone 17 pro. We brought it back and our service advisor was on vacation. The new service advisor worked with BMW and they said they would not replace the head unit because BMW said it will not fix the issue. We have to wait for BMW and/or Apple to update their software. Very frustrating.

I've been lurking on this thread, and more like it for months, now, and some things are clear. It's a shared compatibilityissue between BMW and Apple, but the majority of the blame lies with BMW. The 2022 and 2023 BMWs suffer from a complete wreck of Wi-Fi service, a lack of internet connections, and no ability to supplement the car's communication system with an ESIM. The internal system is so completely weak that it is easily blown away by various interference issues, especially in urban areas, where simple shopping center door operators will tank CarPlay, and if it does it for long enough, the BMW reverts to its own system. Passing an airport ground-radar system, complete wipe out.

Some of the Apple rumor-mill trackers have predicted that the upcoming iOS 27 will have some improvements in CarPlay. One reported that Apple may have designed a workaround that defaults back to the Bluetooth connection between the car and phone during short times when the WiFi connection fails. Fingers crossed, as BMW has been no help at all.

So i picked up the car today. And it appears to have resolved the issue for me. Driving all day with no drop outs or stuttering software is 03/2026.54.

I can’t say for certain if the head unit replacement or the software update resolved it but my thinking is i can’t imagine everyone’s head unit is faulty.

I Am hoping it remains resolved, i’ll update if not.
