MacBook Air or MacBook Pro for software development needs?

I want to purchase a new MacBook and would like some help deciding, so I’m posting here. I currently have a MacBook Air with the configuration below (purchased in 2020):

  • Processor - 1.1 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
  • 8 GB RAM
  • macOS Sequoia - V 15.7.4

I'm a software developer who regularly works with Roblox Studio, Visual Studio Code, AI development tools, and multiple Chrome tabs and windows (including ChatGPT, Gemini, and others). My current device has become quite slow, so I'm planning to buy a new laptop. The current laptop also had a battery issue a year ago, and I had it replaced. Since budget is a concern, I'm trying to decide between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro. Will the new M5 MacBook Air be sufficient for my development needs, or is a MacBook Pro better suited? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.7

The 15" MacBook Air with 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD should do you fine.

I am using an M4 MacBook Air 13" (using external 27" 4K display) with 24GB and 1TB SSD. I use Visual Studio code for embedded processor development (lots of libraries for LCD display, GUI, filesystems, RTOS, HW drivers, plus my actual application code), with two or 3 sometimes more windows//tabs in Safari open and a second editor occasionally to view and cut and paste snippets from previous projects and a serial port communications app without any issue with fairly fast clean build times (incremental builds are always very fast).

So, a 15" M5 MacBook Air should not be much of a problem. You would get faster builds with a MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip but depending on the sort of development. Since a 16" MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip would be ~60% more in cost, would it give you that much faster performance on builds to justify the addition ~60% higher cost is a decision I can't make for you.
