Can't confirm age in UK

Having just updated my iPhone to 26.4 it's now asking me to confirm I'm 18+, I don't have a credit card and it doesn't give me the option to scan my drivers licence so now what? I'm 57 and now my phone is going to treat me like a child.

This is ridiculous if Apple are going to force us to do this at least give us options I'm 57 and now my phone is going to treat me like a child.

So I managed to sort it eventually, I had enlarged the text size to make it easier to read the screen, reading the thread on reddit I saw to click on the add credit card manually option and then select try other id, problem was I couldn't see try other id, I reset the text size to default and the option was visible and clickable, then after about 10 attempts at scanning my drivers licence my phone accepts I'm an adult again, stupid clunky implementation of age verification designed with what appears to be no accessibility considerations in place.

I have a paper driving license, debit cards and bus pass, none are excepted by Apple. As a 69 year old I find it farcical that they won’t except my sole methods of verification but they are quite happy to accept my debit card for the Wallet app. Anybody would think that they’ll accept that as it’s possibly revenue for them. What a total mess, no doubt that they won’t bother sorting this out as it would mean admitting a mistake.

Well you can’t force someone if they don’t want. Like my son 15 years old hes working weekend and he’s paying hes phone if he doesn’t like you can’t do anything because he’s paying hes on. And if force them they report you police after that we’re the parents go prison? We know they concerned. Answer is mind their on business not someone business easy im pretty sure there family is not perfect.

I am writing to raise a concern regarding the age verification process introduced in iOS 26.4.

Unfortunately, no one here in this user-to-user forum can do anything about that. We can't answer why Apple chose the methods it did and not others. Apple doesn't read here for feedback or suggestions. Nor do they answer questions here.

It certainly seems to have, thank goodness my contract is paid for. I’ll give it 2 weeks to sort out or they can lose around 1000 customers from what I will say across the uk. Due to age verification I bs

Just curious, but where else will you go for a cell phone? Android? Nope, they have to follow the same laws. Google Pixel? Nope. They own Android and they too have to follow the same laws. Any cell phone you can buy in the UK will have the same restrictions.

But sure, threaten to go elsewhere, then you can start complaining on another forum for that line of phones. No one here on this user to user only forum will be bothered if you buy a different phone. But it's often a smart idea to look before you leap.

First, I haven’t read every comment so this may well have been said before.

Second, I am as outraged as everyone else about this.

My comment is this:

I didn’t know that my iPhone and iPad had a setting that kept me out of adult content websites/apps until this happened because I don’t frequent them. I can’t provide the required ID that Apple has stated and I’m in my sixties. To that end, I can use my Apple products as usual and just wait to see what happens. Not ideal but will have to do for now.

But what about people who don’t drive, don’t have photo id and don’t have a credit card ?

What about them Dean34? They are simply out of luck and will be restricted from certain websites and services. It’s one of the consequences of living in the 21st century without being able to identify yourself and being off the grid, so to speak.

I am surprised that they don’t use on-device approximate age determination. That would have been a game changer for privacy whilst still offering compliance. It would have been a win for Apple in terms of child protection whilst assuring all but the most nervous about government surveillance.

Hey @GlasgowDave -

As I was reading through the recent exchange, I was actually going to make a very similar suggestion. It would be straightforward to modify their current faceID biometric algorithm - a feature that operates on-device - to identify faces that clearly fall in the 18+ classification. As long as they define the cutoff minimum age estimate sufficiently high (maybe ~28 yo), any inherent margin of error around the critical 16-22 yo range could be mitigated.

Cheers

Does anyone know when an update is going to happen to fix these issues? If it isn’t in the next two weeks I’m off to android

No one here in this user-to-user forum knows Apple's plans for the future. What we do know is that, in the week since they launched the requirement, Apple has already added additional verification options.

Thank you very useful information

I am in my 70s and don’t see the point of this rubbish. I was trying to open a website which deals with online counselling support on individual behaviours and safari refused to open it today saying it was a restricted web site. I am getting fed up with those iPhones truly and may go back to buy an android. Thank you anyway

Farcical update phone and iPad are both demanding proof of age . Debit cards passports and birth certificates not valid yet credit cards and driving licenses are ?.. how is a credit card any different from a debit card . And forgive me if I am wrong but don’t passports clearly show date of birth lol . Farcical the exodus of people to android because of this . Especially in the uk is going to be huge
