MacBook Pro (M5) has uneven keyboard backlight

What you describe as uneven keyboard backlight appears to be light leakage from beneath some key caps.

It's not unusual, I have noticed it on a number of Macs, and I do not believe Apple would consider it a defect, but if if bothers you, no one will attempt to convince you otherwise.

You can certainly return it to Apple for a full cash refund or exchange. A replacement is likely going to exhibit the same appearance.

You're far from stuck. If you return it, and tell Apple the reason, perhaps they'll be motivated to improve things. You're only stuck after 14 days, after which your only recourse is a warranty claim, and as I wrote I seriously doubt they would consider it a manufacturing defect.

You’re not stuck. You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return the MacBook Pro for a full refund with no questions asked. Return it and buy a Windows PC Laptop if you think you did not get the value you were expecting. If it's past 14 days you can sell it and buy the PC Laptop with the proceeds. You need to do what makes you satisfied,

If you can see the glyphs on the key caps to type in the dark, the keyboard backlight has done its job. Whether that is done with enough finesse and enough attention to detail is in the eyes of the beholder.
