MacBook Pro (M5) has uneven keyboard backlight

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a MacBook Pro (M5) and noticed something with the keyboard backlight that’s been bothering me. On a few keys, the light seems uneven — like it shines more from underneath certain keys compared to others. It almost looks like those keys aren’t perfectly aligned or the lighting isn’t evenly distributed.

It’s not a huge issue, but it really starts to irritate me when I’m working in a dark environment and I keep noticing those uneven lights.

Honestly, I didn’t expect something like this on a device that costs around 2.300€ euros.

Has anyone else experienced the same thing? Is this normal for MacBooks?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 26.3

What you describe as uneven keyboard backlight appears to be light leakage from beneath some key caps.

It's not unusual, I have noticed it on a number of Macs, and I do not believe Apple would consider it a defect, but if if bothers you, no one will attempt to convince you otherwise.

You can certainly return it to Apple for a full cash refund or exchange. A replacement is likely going to exhibit the same appearance.

You’re not stuck. You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return the MacBook Pro for a full refund with no questions asked. Return it and buy a Windows PC Laptop if you think you did not get the value you were expecting. If it's past 14 days you can sell it and buy the PC Laptop with the proceeds. You need to do what makes you satisfied,

Could not agree more, it is not an issue, it a backlight. Normal.

—You can turn the Keyboard back light off

—You can work in a more lighted area so its not your huge issue

—If it bothers you return it and buy something different.

You can buy a MacBook Neo for less money and has no back light keyboard— seems it satisfies both complaints:

Apple products are far better than any other products i have tested personally. I am really satisfied with the laptop and its performance but only because of a small issue I'm not gonna waste my time sending back or something. I just wanted to know if there is something, what i could maybe do myself to fix that but it’s okey, thank you for your response.
