iPhone XR: iOS 18.7.7 re-prompt, "Verification Failed

iPhone XR, updated to 18.7.7 after March 25, but now Settings say 18.7.7 is available again. Attempting to install results in "Verification Failed". It appears that enabling IOS 18.7.7 for more phones actually encompasses enabling it for phones that already have the update resulting in the user being prompted to reinstall 18.7.7 again. Is the "Verification Failed" outcome the result of Apple having pulled the update for those phones and the update just not having disappeared yet?

Hello 6x6

I got it on the https://appledb.dev/ (it's not official but very good source), I also checked on ipsw.me (maybe the website that you visited) !

I have no idea why Apple is still showing iOS 18.7.7 build 22H340 on their Apple dev website but this is surely a mistake ! Same as the update showing on iPhones ! This update is kinda mysterious since it was available for every device (including those who can update to iOS 26) :

Apple made a big mistake by releasing an ipsw for 18.7.7 for the iPad 9th gen. It seems that this one is not available anymore (or has never been) on their dev website :

But if you have the link, you can download the ipsw tho it's useless since the update is not signed anymore.

😬 Weird move by Apple, but nothing that we do here !

Hi Samuel-F, where did you get this screenshot? 22H340 seems to be available from the Apple Developer website but it provides no indication about the signature. I did see on an unofficial IPSW website that 22H340 wasn't signed, though.

"Verification Failed":

There is potentially an error connecting to Apple's server. So, if yo u have a computer available, you can try updating through that. Use my User Tip: Update your iPhone Using a Computer - Apple Support

You'd connect it to the computer, and then would perform a Force Restart.

System Status:

As of this reply, there are no errors shown of Apple's System Status: Apple - Support - System Status

Hello TheLittles and everyone here who still tries to help or update! It would be very appreciated to read my messages and understand that the update is not signed anymore, like I said ! I don't understand why this post is still going on 🤔

I’m replying to the OP —not you. So, essentially, following up if they tried it, and if it worked. This update seems to pop up for many —but not all. Using a computer would be more reliable —especially if it’s connected to a network through Ethernet,

Yes, of course, my phone is always plugged in and at 100% charge, as it was for each of the install attempts that started this issue.

That was not related to my failed install attempts. It appeared there was no signature to verify against as has happened with other updates in the past that were released, then pulled by Apple (my understanding is the certificate/checksum used to verify the update is temporarily withdrawn), then restored so install and verification can take place for install.

There was no change in phone charge involved in my case.

There is no iOS 18.7.8. Apple actually released today a new build of iOS 18.7.7 (22H340) which improves security: https://9to5mac.com/2026/04/01/apple-releases-ios-18-security-update-for-all-iphone-users-update-now/.

Your iPhone shows the previous build of iOS 18.7.7 in Settings > General > About. What does it show when you tap "Learn more" in Settings > General > Software Update?

Yes also I Apple probably made a mistake while releasing this update cause they gave an ipsw for the iPad 9 so iPadOS 26 users could downgrade to iPadOS 18, not only that but there was an OTA for every device on iOS/iPadOS 18 so they could upgrade to 18.7.7 from like 18.7.3 (final)

Lots of things so apple quickly unsigned this version, we might get a new build soon !

TheLittles

Several online and also through other media said this does not work.

Maybe all who can should try to 'Submit Product Feedback' to Apple?

Feedback - iPhone - Apple

//www.apple.com/feedback/iphone/

~ Given a number of similar Failure to Update notices, from Apple Update servers

from many (all?) users with this same issue. Perhaps suggest they try now to send

'Feedback Notice to Apple for iPhone iOS on this matter, instead of rinse & repeat.

.I submitted my report to Apple at this site page, & manually copied the Message

with an Apple computer; the form allows options to clarify a report the user leaves.

Well, the folks at Apple must be working some of their magic behind the scenes. Tonight (early AM), the notification was once again at the top of Settings. Choosing to install the update that showed already "downloaded" proceeded to install it and ... succeeded. So now my phone has the intended IOS 18.7.7 22H340 build installed.

Not the smoothest update, but a "thank you" to Apple for continuing to provide updates for IOS 18 and iPhones XR and new phones that don't support IOS 26. There are millions of the devices in service, and due to recent geo-politics making cost for new iPhones much higher, there will likely be these type phones being used for a few years to come. So a nod, a thank you and recognition where recognition is due. The update SNAFU has been remedied for my device.

For the rest, the update signing problem was magically fixed for my on April 3, hopefully all will see similar magic fixes for this problem from today going forward.
