Unable to open any .mp4 files – “Apple could not verify file is free of malware”

Hi everyone,

I am facing an issue on my Mac where I am unable to open any video files with the .mp4 extension.

Whenever I try to open an MP4 file, I get the following error message:

“Apple could not verify ‘[filename].mp4’ is free of malware that may harm your Mac or compromise your privacy.”

Because of this, the file does not open at all.

Key points:

  • This is happening for all MP4 files (not just one specific file)
  • Files are downloaded from trusted sources
  • Even newly downloaded files are showing the same error
  • I am unable to play videos using default apps or even after installing VLC

System details:

  • Mac model: [MacBook Air m4]
  • macOS version: [macOS Tahoe - 26.4]

What I want to understand:

  1. Why is macOS blocking MP4 files like this?
  2. Is this a Gatekeeper or security setting issue?
  3. How can I safely allow and open these files without compromising security?
  4. Is there any permanent fix so this doesn’t happen for every file?

Would really appreciate guidance on resolving this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Aashok *****

On macOS macOS Tahoe 26.4, Apple uses Gatekeeper + XProtect to check downloaded files.

When you download something it gets a quarantine flag

How to check  if the file has been given the quarantine flag

In Terminal, xattr filename.

If you see com.apple.quarantine, it’s flagged.

macOS checks if it is from an identified developer and if it has been notarized by Apple

You can try manual on a single dowloaded (as a Test ) MP4 file >> “Open Anyway”

If this works, the issue is 100% Gatekeeper behaviour

Some browsers aggressively tag downloads.

If you’re using Google Chrome or  Microsoft Edge

Try downloading the same file with Safari

If Safari downloads open fine >> the issue is browser-related.

I too have many MP4 Files created by our son and handed off to us via an External Drive

Each and every MP4 file has opened just fine in VLC

It’s probably not the files. If you have changed the default open with app, and the app does not notify macOS that it is capable of handling that file type, you will get that error. It is also tied to the Quarantine flag.

Get Info on one and check what is set for the default app to open. Try changing it to QuickTime Player. Or, ctrl-click on one and choose an app from the Open With submenu. If that works to open that file, you can change the default open with app and “Change All.”

Note that doesn’t seem to happen to everyone. It may be a corrupt LaunchServices database. I think I've seen that starting up in Safe Mode rebuilds it, but it seems that didn’t help.
