Final Cut Pro: One-time vs. creator plan features?

Is it that the Final Cut Pro app, which you can buy through a one-time purchase the same as the one provided in the creator studio plan, or does the latter lack some features?

As others have pointed out, the subscription version gives access to extra "templates" but the one time purchase FCP has around 400 titles, 250 generators, 400 audio/visual effects and 120 transitions all of which are infinitely customisable and should be enough for anybody.

You would need an extremely good reason to go with the subscription model.

Of course if you opt for Resolve you get not only the editing app but the equivalent of Motion and Compressor plus a sound editing suite all for zero bucks . . . just sayin' in case you wanted to save a bob or two.

The One-Time purchase, which is what I have, gives me all the tools I need to produce good-looking videos with nice titles, captions, and the occasional effect.

The subscription plan, which Apple calls the "Creator Studio" provides a lot of bloatware that I simply don't need. Such as:

  • Pixelmator Pro
  • Freeform
  • Keynote
  • Pages
  • Numbers
  • Logic Pro
  • Mainstage
  • and a few others.

I' not call it bloatware. Many of us have been using those other apps daily for decades.

Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Compressor, Motion are your "pro apps".

Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Feeform, are your office suite.

MainStage is for live band performances, managing state equipment.

The only two I don't use are Freeform and MainStage. But I know folks who use both extensively.

Not sure why you'd call them bloatware. You are not forced to install nor use them if you don't want to.

Fair enough, Ben. Maybe that's a little harsh to call them bloatware, but installing apps that I would never use seems like bloatware to me.

  • Compressor and Motion come with the one-time purchase.
  • I have no use for Pixelmator and Logic Pro.
  • For my Office Suite I use Libre Office.
  • I don't do any live band performances, so I don't need MainStage.

So there ya go. Different strokes for different folks.

Does it install all of those apps, whether you need them or not? Or rather does Creator Studio give you access to install them, should you need them?

If it installs all, whether needed or not, it could be considered bloatware (by the 1990s definition). That emerged amid complaints about trialware, manufacturer utilities, toolbars, and *promotional* apps preinstalled on Windows PCs by OEMs such as Dell, HP, Sony, and others.

If it merely gives you access to a group of full-featured products (and I admit I don't know what it does), I don't see that as any different from Adobe's Creative Cloud suite. I have that, but I only install the ones I need.

They're all stand-alone physically, just subscription monetarily. There's not main launching app like with some bundles. You can choose what to install and what to ignore.

I've had the perpetual license for FCP, Motion, Comp, Logic, Pixelmator Pro since they all first released. I have not gone to subscription yet. The additional content inside the pro apps that comes with the subscription, I've seen first hand, and am not impressed, not worth the extra money. I still use Pages, Numbers, and Keynote for free, they still work just fine. I used Freeform on one project with a client who uses it. I just deleted it. Not bloatware, just don't install what you don't want.

While the subscription covers all of the included apps, you download & install each app individually. So if you only want Final Cut Pro that's the only one you need to install. There's no "bloatware" here. You do remain eligible to install the other Creator Studio apps if you want to (as long as you maintain your subscription.)

They are all good, useful apps with healthy track records and large user bases. They are not the kind of crap you get on a lot of W****** machines.

Also, Final Cut, Compressor & Motion OTP are sold individually (they are not bundled) and their aggregate OTP cost is currently $398.98. It would take a 3-year subscription to equal that. For many people the subscription is a more palatable way to acquire the apps and they can stop anytime if they want to.

But, you loose all those templates if you terminate the subscription, leaving your projects unusable without $$ in a long terms perspective.

This right here is a HUGE deal breaker. Granted, I doubt the extra effects and titles are anything special at all (I've seen exactly nobody talk about what those extra titles etc offer so they're probably pretty boring), but I can't imagine breaking a project like that if I choose to end the subscription.

You really think Apple will not raise the “rent” in the near future? I am pretty sure they will. I have perpetual licences for FXPX, Logic, Motion and Compressor. I really have no intent at all in renting the same software I have already bought. This week I have bought Resolve Studio, because I am very sure Apple will use VFX Effects to pursuade perpetual users to make the switch. This whole situation makes me sick. I will need some months to become proficient in DR and leave the video part of Apple behind me. Some of the Youtubers present this as “a steal”, but I don’t like doing business this way.
