Final Cut Pro titles: Bold font reverts to Regular on export

Hi everyone,

I've run into a frustrating issue regarding title attributes in Final Cut Pro and wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this (or if it's a known issue).

When I select a title in the timeline and change the font weight from Regular to Bold, the text actively updates and displays as Bold inside the Viewer. However, the parameter inside the Text Inspector refuses to update and stays stuck on Regular.

Now when I export the timeline, the text reverts to Regular, completely ignoring the Bold formatting shown in my Viewer.

This happens with both .otf and .ttf fonts and standard macOS system fonts.

Software FCPX 12.00.

Macbook pro M3 Max 36GB and Macbook pro M1 16GB Tahoe 26.4

I have spent several hours on this matter. What I have tried...

Reset the font catalog
Validated all used fonts in Font Book (no problems found)
Reinstalled the fonts
Trashed Final Cut Pro preferences (hold Option+Command while launching)
Tested with default titles, not only custom ones
Copied the project into a brand new library
Opened the same library on a second Mac

(none of it fixed it)

The behavior is identical everywhere, including a freshly created Basic Title with system Helvetica Bold. So this is not a corrupt library, not a corrupt font, and not user error. It travels with the application and OS, not with the project.

What did work for me...

The bug is a commit problem. When you change only the font weight, Final Cut Pro does not register the change for the render path. Forcing any second change makes the weight stick. Two reliable methods:

After setting the weight, touch any other parameter in the Text inspector. For example, set Tracking to 1 and then back to 0. The value does not need to actually change, the parameter just needs to be touched.
Or click into the title text, type a random character, and delete it immediately.

For projects with many titles I select all title clips and the captions at once and nudge Tracking 1 then 0 for the whole selection in one go. After that the export renders the correct weights, and the fix survives quitting and relaunching Final Cut Pro.

Hope this saves someone else the headache.

Are you sure the title is downloaded on your machine? I had a similar problem in the past. When I check the font with the Font Book app the font was not fully downloaded.

The typing an extra character and then deleting it works for me as well. At least there's a workaround that we can use for the next several months or more.

Any font even system fonts whether ttf or otf ..

As for The titles, all of them even the Default ones integrated with FCPX.

Now the only thing that works is to modify the format attributes in inspector, save the format attributes, then apply it on any title, in order to render properly.

Ian, can you try this:

1) Add a basice title (Control-t)

2) In the Text Inspector, change from Regular to, for example, Bold Oblique

3) Make the title into a compound clip (Option-G)

Does the font retain the Bold Oblique appearance? For me, it does not.

But if I add this step: 2b) change alignment to right, then immediately change it to center,

then it retains the correct appearance

Hello, I was following your replies while working and testing .. nothing works except the way I mentioned before, (for me at least), which is when changing the font style to bold or whatever save its format attributes, by clicking at to button in the inspector where you see (Normal), then you can apply this style on any title you use, and it will render with no issues.

it's a workaround for the time being until Apple could find a solution.

This is a Title version of Basic Text Effect and should facilitate replacing problematic Titles by keeping the original text when making a replacement.

It's basically a Basic Title with extra options added for the Title Inspector. Avoid using the Text Inspector (I'm guessing that's where this problem originates).

Make sure Edit Text in Viewer is turned off on export.

I had a super hard time with this issue tonight. I had two titles, both the same font using Bold. I adjusted the kerning and line spacing etc back and forth and it worked for one of the titles but the other one would not work no matter what I did. I eventually got it to work by selecting a different font, going back to my original font, selecting BOLD and then fudging around with the other settings and setting them back.

Sadly Apple is never in any hurry to fix bugs. Even big ones. I figure that the Pro Apps department is extremely understaffed these days, otherwise they'd be quick to fix a bug like this... well unless they just can't figure out HOW to fix it like so many other bugs in FCP. I truly think they need to remake the app from the ground up again, but not the same way FCPX was to FCP7. Make it the same basic app with the same functionality, just rebuilt for the better without all of the Band-Aid fixes.

Indeed, changing the line spacing for me seems to do the trick. Thanks for the tip! Also, I guess this works if you only have one line of text. Mind you, this font re-sizing-changing-on-its-own bug will be fixed soon.

One more thing I would try out is making the titles (or the titles and the clips they are over) into compound clips before exporting.

Please help us help you by narrowing it down.

Can you NAME a specific example of ONE title template and ONE font used that causes this?

For example: does it happen with "Basic Title" and "Helvetica" - to mentio

Saying "all of them" may be comforting but does not help us test. You may have tried 20 titles, and perhaps the 21st would not exhibit the issue. There are hundreds of titles and dozens or hundreds of fonts...

I did it both without and with a compound clip and it retained the bold italic font on export.

I mentioned the compound clip only because it was a way to cause the problem to emerge.

But now I don't even need that.

Here is an example of what I see just now:

1) Press Control-T and type some text (or just leave the default word "Title", it does not matter)

2) Select Bold (or Bold Oblique or another option, it does not matter):

it snaps back to Regular (but the popup menu still shows a checkmark on Bold) and appears in the viewer as regular

3) Make some change to something else in the Text Inspector - alignment, size, whatever.

The Bold setting "takes" and the correct form appears in the Viewer as well

4) Revert the changes in step 3 - the Bold remains and all works well

And yes, I am running 12.2 on Tahoe 26.4.1
