Final Cut Pro titles: Bold font reverts to Regular on export

Hi everyone,

I've run into a frustrating issue regarding title attributes in Final Cut Pro and wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this (or if it's a known issue).

When I select a title in the timeline and change the font weight from Regular to Bold, the text actively updates and displays as Bold inside the Viewer. However, the parameter inside the Text Inspector refuses to update and stays stuck on Regular.

Now when I export the timeline, the text reverts to Regular, completely ignoring the Bold formatting shown in my Viewer.

This happens with both .otf and .ttf fonts and standard macOS system fonts.

Software FCPX 12.00.

Macbook pro M3 Max 36GB and Macbook pro M1 16GB Tahoe 26.4

I have spent several hours on this matter. What I have tried...

Reset the font catalog
Validated all used fonts in Font Book (no problems found)
Reinstalled the fonts
Trashed Final Cut Pro preferences (hold Option+Command while launching)
Tested with default titles, not only custom ones
Copied the project into a brand new library
Opened the same library on a second Mac

(none of it fixed it)

The behavior is identical everywhere, including a freshly created Basic Title with system Helvetica Bold. So this is not a corrupt library, not a corrupt font, and not user error. It travels with the application and OS, not with the project.

What did work for me...

The bug is a commit problem. When you change only the font weight, Final Cut Pro does not register the change for the render path. Forcing any second change makes the weight stick. Two reliable methods:

After setting the weight, touch any other parameter in the Text inspector. For example, set Tracking to 1 and then back to 0. The value does not need to actually change, the parameter just needs to be touched.
Or click into the title text, type a random character, and delete it immediately.

For projects with many titles I select all title clips and the captions at once and nudge Tracking 1 then 0 for the whole selection in one go. After that the export renders the correct weights, and the fix survives quitting and relaunching Final Cut Pro.

Hope this saves someone else the headache.

I opened the "Basic Text Effect" in Motion, turned "Editable in FCP" OFF; this way, the problem does not seem to occur!

Was the last I heard about it and why I'm a little confused. I wonder what the difference is from test to test? Doesn't matter. I'm going to stop trying now.

The best way to solve this problem is for all of us to submit feedback. In FCPX, click Final Cut Pro ---> Provide Final Cut Pro Feedback.

This has to be fixed asap. It's beyond frustrating and it's affecting our work and client relationships. If any has a good fix, please let me know.

It’s simply a bug in Final Cut Pro—there are compatibility issues with the new operating system. I’ve tested it on older system versions, and Final Cut Pro 10 doesn't have this problem!

The same phenomenon has been reported in Japan as well. It apparently occurred after updating to FCP12.2.

Does this problem also include using a "text effect" like Basic Text Effect (https://fcpxtemplates.com/?smd_process_download=1&download_id=23853) instead of a Title?

The complete solution must come in the form of an update.

In the meantime, try one of the much simpler workarounds offered in the thread. No need to delete fonts left and right.

It’s a major problem that’s wasting hours of my every day! I’m using the latest version, 12.2, and here’s what’s happening:

The app keeps returning to “regular” mode.

Honestly, this is beyond frustrating! I’ve tried many built-in and downloaded titles, and they all do the same thing. The fonts are different, but the behavior is the same. I’ve tested it on different MacBook Pros and different titles, and the issue persists. Even generators are affected.

STOP IGNORING THIS AND FIX IT! It’s a significant problem, and unless you’re an editor, you don’t understand how important this is. This is now costing me my hard-earned money and clients!

You are NOT talking to Apple here. This is a user forum.

In Final Cut Pro itself, do:

Final Cut Pro->Provide Final Cut Pro Feedback...

and add your report of the problem. The more people report it, the more likely it is to be fixed sooner, rather than later.

In the meantime, a few workarounds have been suggested.

One *last* experiment would be to go into Motion and uncheck Editable in FCP, although I doubt it would make a difference. I can't believe Apple would let this problem run so long... (sometimes I'm glad I'm stuck in 10.4.10 :D)

To nobody's surprise, Apple has NOT fixed this issue in the newly-released Final Cut Pro 12.3.

Like many of the other longstanding bugs in the app (audio keyframe issues) they are probably not smart or talented enough to figure out how to fix it.

Hi, the thing is this is happening in FCPX only. In Apple Motion for example yhere is no such issue

I'm still on Tahoe 26.2 so it sounds as though the latest macOS update could be the problem.

None of these AI 'solutions' alleviate this problem. In fact, I tried all of these and more before I found this thread and one other on Reddit.

Tahoe 26.4.1 (the problem started for me after this update, but not immediately after)

It works for the duration of the session, but if I quit FCP and re-open the Library/Project, it reverts to Regular again.

This is a show-stopper for me. I cannot have projects changing font choices every time I open them.

VERY unhappy camper right now. I have client work to do...

Hi, Fox

Yes, the problem also manifested when using your effect. I installed it, applied to a clip, changed the style to Bold Italic

and then immediately exported. The resulting video came with the regular style.
