Final Cut Pro titles: Bold font reverts to Regular on export

Hi everyone,

I've run into a frustrating issue regarding title attributes in Final Cut Pro and wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this (or if it's a known issue).

When I select a title in the timeline and change the font weight from Regular to Bold, the text actively updates and displays as Bold inside the Viewer. However, the parameter inside the Text Inspector refuses to update and stays stuck on Regular.

Now when I export the timeline, the text reverts to Regular, completely ignoring the Bold formatting shown in my Viewer.

This happens with both .otf and .ttf fonts and standard macOS system fonts.

I have spent several hours on this matter. What I have tried...

  1. Reset the font catalog
  2. Validated all used fonts in Font Book (no problems found)
  3. Reinstalled the fonts
  4. Trashed Final Cut Pro preferences (hold Option+Command while launching)
  5. Tested with default titles, not only custom ones
  6. Copied the project into a brand new library
  7. Opened the same library on a second Mac

(none of it fixed it)

The behavior is identical everywhere, including a freshly created Basic Title with system Helvetica Bold. So this is not a corrupt library, not a corrupt font, and not user error. It travels with the application and OS, not with the project.

What did work for me...

The bug is a commit problem. When you change only the font weight, Final Cut Pro does not register the change for the render path. Forcing any second change makes the weight stick. Two reliable methods:

  1. After setting the weight, touch any other parameter in the Text inspector. For example, set Tracking to 1 and then back to 0. The value does not need to actually change, the parameter just needs to be touched.
  2. Or click into the title text, type a random character, and delete it immediately.

For projects with many titles I select all title clips and the captions at once and nudge Tracking 1 then 0 for the whole selection in one go. After that the export renders the correct weights, and the fix survives quitting and relaunching Final Cut Pro.

Hope this saves someone else the headache.

What the checkbox means is that when selected, the text is accessible in the Viewer, otherwise, only parameters published will be accessible. And, there's a difference between Titles and Effects. Text is not editable in effects in the viewer, *but* the text object can be selected and moved in the viewer. When Editable in FCP is not selected, controlling a title in the viewer usually requires an OSC (and in the case of Titles, the actual text cannot be selected and edited in the viewer.) There are uses for such conditions although it is extremely difficult to expound on what those would be ;) However, one major example would be a 3D model made from 3D Text. And HUDs and overlays would make some sense for that too.

Thank you Luis!

So, if I understand this correctly:

All titles suffer from this problem regardless if Editable in FCP is on or off. [I'm trusting that the Edit Text in Viewer option *was* off when exported.] Disappointing, but not surprising.

An Effect with Editable in FCP switched off actually exports as it is supposed to? Or am I mistaken?

Sorry, but an effect with "Editable in FCP" turned off suffers from the same problems.

I have just tested again using your "Basic Text Effect", which has this off, and it still exports incorrectly.

Appreciate the advice, unfortunately neither of those fixes worked for me. Mostly posting in here just to try to get Apple to notice this bug and get it fixed. It's absurdly annoying and I've been trying to export the same project over 10 times because of it. A few of my exports have managed to export some of the text boxes properly while failing to get most correct. But most of them are just straight up all wrong. Insane that this is still a problem with a software of this level. (Note, I'm on the new 12.3 update and this is still a problem.)

Hey, you're a genius, the last suggestion worked for me, phew. I'm late to the party but this happened after I updated to 12.2, I started noticing it last month but thought it was a glitch. But now I have a big client project on which requires lots of titles and it was a nightmare which drove me to google the problem. Apple really needs to sort it out and I have given them feedback through FCP as the thread suggests.

Anyway, I hope this work-around will work until they fix it. Thanks everyone for your contribution. You saved my a*** 🙏
