Internal speakers no longer showing in sound preferences with Mac mini 2018 - but get the turn on sound when powering up so speaker OK. External interface show and work OK. If I plug headphones in, they register. Have disconnected everything, powered down etc, but the machine has suddenly decided to ignore internal speakers.

There is a micro switch inside of the headphone port that tells the MIDI setup to switch from internal to external.
In you case, it sounds like that micro switch is stuck or damaged and telling the MIDI setup to use external output.
If the micro switch is stuck, then sometimes it can be reset by plugging the headphones in and out a few times.
If the micro switch is damaged, then it might be better to just live with it until you're ready to buy a new Mac mini.

it was all unplugged! I use deoxit very sparingly, hence just a tiny amount on the end of a jack plug. Working in the audio industry I know how much damage indiscriminate use of switch cleaners etc can do. But I figured just a little to maybe ease a contact might help. And thinking about it, I've never used that socket so maybe a build up of dust etc -

Thank you for your advice. I tried a plug in there a few times to no avail, but I've just done it again with a tiny amount of deoxit on the barrel and it seems rot have done the trick.

Beware when using any type of liquid cleaning fluids.
You should shut down the Mac mini and disconnect the power.
Only use a small amount of alcohol or electro clean on a barrel or swab.
Then make sure that it has evaporated before restoring the power and starting up.
