Spotlight Search Broken After iOS 26.4.1 Update (iPhone 16 Pro Max)

After updating to iOS 26.4.1 on my iPhone 16 Pro Max, Spotlight search is no longer working properly. The search function is essentially broken—I can’t find apps, text messages, or even photos using keywords or descriptions.

I contacted Apple Support, but they advised me to wait for the next update. Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a workaround?

BIG UPDATE:

iOS 26.5 update has FIXED search for my phone!

Before installing, I made sure to close all applications and do a restart of the phone. THEN, I went to Settings and updated. I left the phone plugged in and unused for about 45 mins just to be sure.

I am happy to report that 26.5 has solved this dreadful problem for me too!

This has been such a nuisance the last couple of weeks. On the upside: I appreciate the Spotlight search function much more now.

Thanks all in this thread for sharing, trying and keeping everyone up to date!

Oh, and cheers for Apple to fix this issue, on purpose or by accident.

Cheers,

D.

Exactly the same scenario. Update to 26.4.1. Spotlight broken. Tried all tips including the “turn off search off for all apps, hard reboot, and turn them back on), next to the change language to English US and also the reset settings on the phone tips. No luck.

Apple support/engineers seem aware of the issue (known error) but since it affected some and not all people it has to be seen that it will be included in an update as fix, and also when, Patches and the components they contain are usually planned (and tested) long time ahead.

So missing this functionality cripples the use of my Iphone (16 Pro), I am not holding my breath Apple will fix this soon.

I’ve got the same issue. I think it already started before the 26.4.1 update and has not been fixed by 26.4.2.

In addition to the non-working search I noticed high battery usage and a hot iPhone. I think that the index build fails and is tried over and over again.

I switched off “Show related content” under “Search”, and this solves the battery issue.

But still waiting for a permanent fix.

Still hoping an update will fix this issue. It is a terrible nuisance to have the search function “broken”.

Not much to diagnose in the closed ecosystem that is IOS.

If I had certainty that restoring a backup would fix it I’d join the bandwagon. But I can’t say for sure, nor do the Apple support people, that the search function will work again. So waiting a little longer for a new update and hope and pray for a fix.

The workaround I am using is putting my most used apps on the first screen of my iphone, including apple store: when searching an app in there you can open it from there. Easier than swiping the 8-odd pages trying to find the required app with your eyes.

Spotlight Search issues aren't always caused by the iOS update.  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.
