iPhone 4

My girlfriend sent me an event invitation from her iCal program on MacBook.
My iPhone received the e-mail with the .ics file attachment. I have tried to click the attachment to accept the invitation, but nothing happens.

Is it possible to accept an iCal event on iPhone? Or must I wait until I go home to do it on my iMac?

MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz (17"), Mac OS X (10.5.8), 4 Gig RAM, 320 GB 7200 rpm HD, Anti-Glare

Only if you have a MobileMe or an MS Exchange account on the iPhone. Else, you just need to accept the invite from your Mac (the iPhone's Mail app cannot handle .ics files).

    I have MobileMe.
The iCal invite was sent to my MobileMe e-mail. I still cannot accept the invitation.

In your MobileMe settings on the iPhone, do you have the Calendar set to ON? Normally, invitations show up as a badge (red dot) on the Calendar app, and that's where yo accept/decline them (you see them in Mail, too, but can't do anything with them).

Yes, I have Calendar ON in MobileMe settings on iPhone.
I use MobileMe to Push my e-mail, contacts, calendar to my iPhone.

Furthermore, I have "New Invitation Alerts" set to ON in the Calendar settings.

There is not a red badge on my Calendar app on iPhone.

Odd. Does she also have MobileMe?
  • subterFUSE Level 1 Level 1 (40 points)
Yes. She sent me the iCal invite from her MacBook Pro. The e-mail message I received came from her MobileMe e-mail address.

Try turning off Calendar syncing, then turning it back on. Or, delete the MobileMe account from your phone, then re-add it.

Turned off Calendar, and back on. It did not work, either.

It's looking like this might not be possible?
Rather disappointing, considering iCal and iPhone Calendar are both Apple products and one would think Apple could figure out how to make them work together?

I have done some research online about this issue, and from what I am reading this is NOT possible currently.

The iPhone is simply not capable of accepting iCal event invitations.
The same goes for the iPad and iPod Touch, and MobileMe web client.

The only way to accept an iCal invitation is to use iCal on an Apple computer.

Let's hope Apple decides to add this most-basic functionality soon.

Good to know - I thought it worked with MobileMe. It certainly works with MS Exchange accounts - I accept or decline many invitations every day.

I Have iPhone 4 with last OS version.
    I'm a MobilieMe member.

from iphone4 it is possible to send iCal invitations but not possible to accept or refuse it. It looks incredible as the new iCal application on iphone shows a new menu on right bottom (invitations menu).
I contcat MobileMe support twice for this issue, one guy said it was possible normally except for shared calendars, another guy said that it was simply not possible yet.

I took an appointment to a Genius Bar to ask the question. Even within Apple'team, this subject encounters different points of view...

Thanks for all your research. I also find it incredible. You mentioned the genius bar and that you encountered different points of view. I am assuming no one you encountered had a work around other than going to your gmail account and accepting it there or getting on your mac and accepting it there. It would be great if I could simply READ what the invitation is (time, place, Phone#, etc). since sometimes I miss the call because I wasn't able to get to my computer.

    thanks again

    hi *****

    Have you contacted us before?

    Customer [1:03 p.m.]:
    Regarding this issue? no

    Advisor [1:03 p.m.]:
I understand that you had some concerns regarding iCal invitations, correct?

    Customer [1:03 p.m.]:

    Advisor [1:04 p.m.]:
How could we assist you today?

    Customer [1:05 p.m.]:
Please could you tell me how I accept an ical invitation on my Iphone (3GS) so that it then syncs with my mobile me account
    Customer [1:06 p.m.]:
When I recieve and email with an invite in ics file format I cannot open it on my phone to add to my calendar

    Advisor [1:07 p.m.]:
You will have to open the invite in your mail first.
    Advisor [1:07 p.m.]:
Are you able to do that?

    Customer [1:07 p.m.]:
    My mail on my phone?

    Advisor [1:07 p.m.]:

    Customer [1:09 p.m.]:
I receive the invitation on my iphone. Is it possible to open it in mail/ical on my phone?

    Advisor [1:10 p.m.]:
Your phone will not open the invite file directly in that manner. It will need to be opened via web or computer.

    Customer [1:10 p.m.]:
    Customer [1:11 p.m.]:
    That's not good
    Customer [1:12 p.m.]:
Why won't my phone open the invite? Seems a little strange!
    Customer [1:14 p.m.]:
The invite was made on a mac with apple software and is being looked at with apple hardware and software at the other end. Seems like a basic thing to be able to accept the invite there and then without logging in to web or another mac.
    Customer [1:15 p.m.]:
    Do I have this right?

    Advisor [1:15 p.m.]:
Correct. Once you accept the invite, then it will appear on your device.

    Customer [1:15 p.m.]:
But I cannot use my device to accept the invite?!

    Advisor [1:18 p.m.]:
    Unfortunately, no.

    Customer [1:18 p.m.]:
    Customer [1:19 p.m.]:
That is a pretty shocking lack of basic functionality, I have to say. Are there plans for this to be implemented?

    Advisor [1:21 p.m.]:
Actually, yes. Due to high volume of customer demand, our engineers are in the process of making that possible on ios4 devices.
    Advisor [1:22 p.m.]:
Unfortunately, I do not have an exact date of the release. But soon..

    Customer [1:23 p.m.]:
I'm not surprised there has been a high volume of demand! I bet you'll be glad when it is implemented, do you have to deal with this complaint all the time?!
    Customer [1:24 p.m.]:
It seemed like such an obvious thing to work that I presumed I had my mobile me account
    set up wrong

    Advisor [1:25 p.m.]:
It has become more frequent, but I do admit that the feature is very necessary.

    Customer [1:25 p.m.]:
But it is definitely on it's way?

    Advisor [1:26 p.m.]:

    Customer [1:29 p.m.]:
I'll have to wait and in the meantime remember that I received an invite earlier in the day that I need to find in my mail either online or another mac and accept it there! Thank you for your help in clarifying it was Apple and not me! (And that a solution is on it's way). Sincere thanks.

    Advisor [1:30 p.m.]:
Take care and Have a lovely weekend ahead, ******.
    Advisor [1:30 p.m.]:
The chat session has ended. Thanks for using Apple's Chat support.

If anyone is still having problems with this issue, the fix is simple. If you have a Mobileme account, and so does the recipient, send the invite to their Mobileme email address, not their normal email address (such as then it will show up in the invitation box. The key is using the Mobileme email address for the invite/event. Hope this helps
