Can an AirTag communicate from inside a metal safe?

Hello everyone,

I’m considering placing an Apple AirTag inside a home safe as an extra layer of tracking in case the safe were ever moved or stolen. I’m specifically wondering whether an AirTag, especially a 2nd generation AirTag, would still be able to communicate properly if it is kept inside a safe.

The safe would likely be a fireproof/waterproof home safe, possibly made with a steel outer shell and thick insulated walls. My concern is whether the metal and fireproof construction would block or severely weaken the AirTag’s Bluetooth signal, Precision Finding, or its ability to be detected by nearby Apple devices through the Find My network.

I understand an AirTag is not a true GPS tracker and depends on nearby Apple devices to update its location, but I’m curious how practical it would be in this situation.

Has anyone here tried putting an AirTag inside a safe, lockbox, metal cabinet, or similar enclosure? Did it still update its location reliably, or was the signal mostly blocked?

Any real-world experience or technical insight would be appreciated.

Thank you.
