Two total system freezes within 24 hours after updating to macOS 15.7.7

Anyone else experiencing total screen freeze after having updated to macOS Sequoia 15.7.7 ?

I got two total system freezes within 24 hours after updating to macOS 15.7.7

Hardware: MacBookPro (Apple Silicon, M2 — Mac14,10)

Previous OS: macOS 15.7.5 — zero freezes in the past 12 months of daily use

Current OS: macOS 15.7.7 (updated two days ago)

Since updating to 15.7.7, I have experienced TWO total system freezes in little more than 24 hours. The screen is completely frozen, no input device responds (keyboard, trackpad, mouse), and there is no kernel panic and no panic log written on the next boot. The only way to recover is to hold the power button and force a hard reboot.

In the entire year on 15.7.5 and earlier 15.7.x point releases, I had ZERO freezes of any kind on this exact hardware, with the exact same workload and the exact same set of installed applications. Nothing on this machine changed except the OS update.

This is a clear regression introduced by 15.7.7. A point release in a security-update train is supposed to be a stability and security patch — not something that turns a previously rock-solid machine into one that requires hard reboots twice a day.

I am a senior software engineer. I do not have time to run Safe Mode, reinstall the OS, reset NVRAM, disable login items, or perform any of the other ritual troubleshooting steps that get suggested every time Apple ships a broken point release. The machine worked perfectly until Apple pushed this update. The burden is on Apple to fix what Apple broke.

If anyone else is seeing the same behavior on 15.7.7 — total freeze, no panic, hard reboot only — please reply so this gets visibility. And to anyone from Apple reading this: file it, fix it, and ship 15.7.8.

I have been running OS 15.7.7 for the last 4 days without a single problem and the MacBook Pro 16" has been on 24 hours a day. Being a senior software engineer, you are aware that third party launch files and extensions commonly conflict with OS changes, especially when security patches have closed loopholes used by those third party files, until they offer an update on their own. It is those third parties that are responsible for updating their products for compatibility with the latest OS versions, and that is true even for Microsoft updates.

Apple does not read here to offer any sort of Support or Feedback. The only Apple employees involved are moderators for the purpose of making sure posts meet the Community Etiquette guidelines. If you want to send Feedback to Apple where they will read your concerns about Mac OS, that is done here:

What you will find here is support by other Community members that are not employed by Apple and I also agree that the EtreCheck report would be helpful. Not only will it show any third party files that may be causing a conflict, but will show additional details about the Crashes/Hangs on processes to provide clues for what may be causing the problem.

sorry, but if you cannot spend a few minutes to even try the basic troubleshooting that we would recommend, how are we supposed to help you?

sorry, no. I am having ZERO issues with my iMac that is also running sequoia 15.7.7.

since you don't have enough time for trouble shooting, I'm doubtful you will want to try my other suggestion.

i’m thinking you should download and run the free version of EtreCheck so we can see if you have some software installed that is causing your issue. make sure you give "full disk access" to etrecheck. Learn how to use it by reading Using EtreCheck. if you need help interpreting the report, you can see how to post the report here by reading How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report. and it automatically obscures sensitive things (like serial numbers) so you don't have to worry about sharing the report here.

FWIW, we have no problems after upgrading on our 2018 and 2020 M1 Mac mini's to 15.7.7

I concur with 100% Jeffery. The fastest and easiest way to track down the problem is using EtreCheckPro.

To do that, download and run the free version of EtreCheckPro, from > https://etrecheck.com/en/index.html

Then post back here with your Report, as per > How to use the Add Text Feature When Post… - Apple Community

I certainly can understand your thinking. but sometimes a problem arrises after a software update even if the problematic software was installed long ago. things like that can creep up on you.

and yes, even one unexpected shutdown would be cause for concern from me. along with EtreCheck, I would also spend a few minutes to try safe mode or a couple other basic steps to trouble shoot. as far as reinstalling macOS, that would be a last ditch effort as that does take quite a while.

I will try EtreCheck, however I doubt is a problem with the installed software because I didn't update or install anything else and being a minor system update (from 15.7.5 to 15.7.7) there should be no changes that could break things.

The only software doing "dangerous" things that I am using is Xcode 26 but no issues at all for many months before the system update.

I never had two total freezes like that (no panic or such) in 24 hours since I was using System 9...
