I want to mark all of my thousands of old emails as read. On my Mac I can select all with command "a" but the menu doesn't show a "mark all as read"option. Anybody know where that is hiding?

You are on the right track. Select all emails in a mailbox using the command + A keyboard shortcut, then right-click the selection and choose "Mark as Read" to make all those emails read.
