iPhone 17 microphone: Works for Siri, not for calls

Hi everyone,

I’m having a very strange microphone issue on my iPhone 17 and I’m trying to figure out if anyone else has experienced this.

The weird part is:

  • Siri works perfectly
  • Speech-to-text / keyboard dictation also works perfectly

But:

  • Voice Memos does not work
  • Calls don’t capture my voice properly
  • Apps like WhatsApp/Instagram/etc can’t use the microphone correctly
  • Video recordings may also have no audio

Things I already tried:

  • iOS update
  • Restart / force restart
  • Reset settings
  • Permissions check
  • Bluetooth off
  • Apple diagnostics / health check

Apple diagnostics says the hardware is completely fine. Also, microphones work normally with AirPods.

So it seems like:

  • the microphones are physically working
  • but normal apps cannot access them correctly

Has anyone found a fix for this?

Especially without replacing hardware?

Thanks!

iPhone 17 microphone: Works for Siri, not for calls: Hi everyone, I’m having a very strange microphone issue on my iPhone 17 and I’m trying to figure out if anyone else has experienced this.

The weird part is:[…]

Call Microphone Issues:

It might be a hardware error, or a misconfiguration issue. So, a few things to go by and try…

Provide More:

So, when did this all begin? Was it after an update? Was it after software install?

Back Up, then Set this Up Anew:

What settings did you reset? Resetting your iPhone and Erase All Content might do the job; but, just know that whatever you do not back up would be unrecoverable. So, create a backup of your data prior to the reset. That way, you can have something to recover it from.

  1. Go to: Settings app
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: Transfer or Reset iPhone
  4. Tap: Reset
  5. Tap: Erase All Content and Settings

Troubleshooting iPhone Call Audio:

A. Output and Input:

B. Try a Force Restart:

If stuck in a backup, perform a Force Restart. Nothing would be lost, in fact, the transfer would pop right back up.

C. Clear the Caches:

System Data consists of caches, all of which gather over time. They are create as apps learn from your use of them so that they open quicker and testing faster. So, clear the System Data, as obstruction in the Phone app may be occurring here. Use my User Tip: How to Clear "System Data" in your iPhone's Storage: - User Tip
