MacBook daily use video for iPad vs. MacBook decision

I would like to see a video of the MacBook neo being used in a day to day situation. I have an iPad and can’t make up my mind to upgrade my iPad or go got the MacBook. Is there such a video out there?

I’m aware of the latter and trying to qualify his question. There very few YouTubers that do Day In A Life videos and even fewer that would use a Neo.

Here’s one I can recommend,

and another,

Let’s see what OP has to say to clarify what they want. 😃😃😃

Are you looking at iPad Air, iPad Pro or iPad? What screen size11” or 13”?

Personally I prefer 13” iPad for its on the go capabilities and features. This partially stems from my photography needs and need to use the cellular feature that iPads offer. MacBooks do not easily offer cellular and rely on WiFi for connectivity. If cellular is not a higher priority, the Neo might give you the features you need at a lower price.

How important is additional internal storage? How important is touch and Apple Pencil? Are you a patient person or do you have times that completing a task quickly is extremely important?

I have a small business, 2 staff and I use my iPad and phone, for spreadsheets, to manage stock, banking in and out, I don’t use it to prepare accounts for submission but it reduces my payment to my accountants as everything required is easily accessible. I also use it for contacting suppliers and customers. I have a small website, which I really use to sign post to the shop.
Then personal, emails, videos, socials. I don’t tend to download a lot, apart from books, I walk and listen for downtime.

So basically,

  • Spreadsheets
  • Banking
  • Email
  • Possibly word processing and/or reading .DOC and .PDF documents generated by others
  • Updating a Web site
  • Social media
  • Listening to audiobooks

Some of these things (banking, social media) might have dedicated apps on an iPhone or iPad, but not on a Mac (or Windows PC), where you'd be expected to access services through a Web browser.

I have a iPhone 17 pro max, but my iPad 10, is struggling with my work load. I don’t keep personal photos on my iPad, only on my phone.

The iPad (10th generation) came out in October 2022, and is recent enough that it can run the current version of iPadOS.

Looking at benchmarks, the iPad (A16) and MacBook Neo are faster, but I'm getting the feeling that it's probably RAM, storage, or app availability that's causing the "struggling", not raw CPU power. (By "app availability", I mean, are there apps that you want to run that are only available for Macs and/or Windows PCs, not for iPads? That question can also work the other way around, but you did say specifically that it was the iPad that was struggling.)

  • iPad (10th generation): 4 GB of RAM. 64 or 256 GB of storage. CPU benchmarks: 2077 / 4806.
  • iPad (A16): 6 GB of RAM. 128, 256, or 512 GB of storage. CPU benchmarks: 2529 / 5876.
  • MacBook Neo (13-inch, A18 Pro): 8 GB RAM. 256 or 512 GB of storage. CPU benchmarks: 3440 / 8397.
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 8 GB of RAM. 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB of storage. CPU benchmarks: 3787 / 9811.
  • M5 MacBook Air: 16, 24, or 32 GB of RAM. 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, or 4 TB of storage. CPU benchmarks: 4152 / 16655

I don't know how big your spreadsheets are, or how memory-hungry your spreadsheet app is, but your iPhone 17 Pro Max and the MacBook Neo both have twice as much RAM as your iPad (10th generation). I've also thrown in the M5 MacBook Air for comparison. It would have been the entry-level Mac notebook in the current lineup if the Neo had not come along.

Bottom line is, I need a new iPad or MacBook Neo. In the UK you can still get a 256GB
Hope that gives more of an insight as to my question.
The iPad, including the Magic Keyboard and 256GB is double the price of the Neo £600 against £1,200 big difference.

How much storage does your 10th-generation iPad have, and how much of that are you using?

Whether you get an iPad or a Mac, if one of the problems that you are facing with your current iPad is insufficient storage, you do not want to compound the problem by buying a new device which does not have enough storage, just because it has the lowest initial cost. ("Penny wise but pound foolish" costs more in the long run.)

Welcome!

I'd search YouTube for a video

Something to consider if you go Neo: I and other senior contributor here are recommending the higher-cost version over the basic one, primarily because 256GB storage is proving too small for many Mac users in general.

Yes, some things can be off-loaded to an external drive but not others. System files and some apps like MS Office must be on the boot volume, i.e., your internal a storage. You'll pay an extra US$100 for double the storage and Touch ID, but I believe you will be happier with the decision two years for now.

The NEO has the same processor as an iPhone 16 Pro.

Are you wanting to do short form or long form videos? Long form would be problematic. But a well equipped iPad Pro or iPad Air would be capable of most long form videos. iPad Pros can be purchased with 1 TB or 2 TB SSD storage in addition to 16GB RAM. However, the price is definitely in MacBook Air and MacBook Pro prices.

Do you have a maximum budget in mind?

Is the 256GB even available any longer? I’ve read on several reliable websites that the 256GB is no longer available.

If I remember correctly, Apple dropped the 256 GB storage option for the Mac mini. So the 16/256 GB M4 Mac mini that costs $599 USD is no longer available. The base model is now the 16/512 GB M4 Mac mini that costs $799 USD (same price as before).

EDIT: I guess it is as 5/23 at least on the Apple Store online in US.

You can still get 256 GB on the MacBook Neo and the iMac.

It looks as if the minimum is 512 GB for the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and MacBook Air; 1 TB for the MacBook Pro.

I don't think that the OP said that they wanted to make videos. All they said is that they want help in deciding whether to buy an iPad or a MacBook Neo for "daily use" in a "day to day situation". (That vague description doesn't tell us too much about how light or how heavy their workload might be, or what specific applications they're hoping to run.)

The reference to video was to wanting to see a video made by somebody else, showing a MacBook Neo being used in a day-to-day situation.

Thanks everyone, someone rightly said I hadn’t given enough info on what I was looking for. I have only used iPad and I phones since iPhone 6 when ever that was , and previously androids. Therefore all I’m used to is touch screens. I was given an old MacBook Air and I didn’t get on so well with it, basically because I didn’t take time to ‘play’ with it before delving right in.

I’m used to doing all of the above in touch screen and probably a tiny bit nervous about losing this lazy way of working.

I have a iPhone 17 pro max, but my iPad 10, is struggling with my work load. I don’t keep personal photos on my iPad, only on my phone.

Hi, and thanks to all who answered my query. Fate has taken a hand in my decision. Unfortunately, last week I fell have broke my wrist and two of my fingers, including physiotherapy the doctor reckons I won’t have full function for at least 20 weeks. This really has forced me to choose the iPad at the moment and put the Neo on my Christmas wish list..🤷‍♀️

Again thanks to all who answered my question. All things considered I think I would’ve went with the Neo, but I think the learning curve would’ve been too much for me at this point.
