iPhone 17 Pro video recordings - sporadic screeching noise

iPhone 17 Pro camera video recording high-pitched screeching noise on sporadic video clips.

Have been in long discussions with Apple over this for months, but still no resolution.

I use iPhones for professional content capture, and sporadically, there will be 1-4 videos where the natural sound is replaced by a high-pitched screeching noise.

No natural audio can be heard or restored.

Apple suggested toggling off wind noise reduction, but that made zero change.

I've found Reddit threads (like this one) and TikTok videos about similar issues, but changing audio to other formats hasn't worked either.

I'm in a group with professionals who solely use the iPhone 17 Pro for work, and each member has reported a loud screeching sound in sporadic video clips captured by the iPhone's camera, too.

I've had multiple handsets from the official Apple store to try to resolve the problem - it is not a hardware issue.

This is occurring over all of the previous IOS updates, too.

Hoping this comment finds people who are also experiencing this, so it highlights to Apple the need for a fix.

I need iPhone video sound to work consistently for my job.

Hi iphoneuserrrrrr,

Thanks for documenting this so thoroughly — the links and context really help others who are experiencing the same issue.

Since you've already replaced multiple handsets and Apple Support hasn't resolved it, this strongly points to a software-level audio processing bug in iOS rather than a hardware defect. The fact that an entire group of professionals is experiencing it confirms this.

While we wait for Apple to address it in a future update, here are a few workarounds that might help reduce the occurrences:

  1. Try recording with a third-party app like Filmic Pro, Blackmagic Camera, or ProMovie — these apps bypass some of Apple's default audio processing pipeline and may avoid the screeching artifact entirely. Worth testing for your professional work.
  2. Disable Audio Ducking: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual and check that any audio-related processing is set to default. Sometimes accessibility audio settings can interfere.
  3. Record in a different video format: Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and switch between "High Efficiency" (HEVC) and "Most Compatible" (H.264). Also try toggling ProRes or Apple Log if available — different codecs use different audio encoding paths.
  4. Lock the microphone source: When recording, if you're using a case, try removing it. Some cases create micro-vibrations near the microphone grilles that get amplified by the noise processing algorithms.
  5. File a detailed bug report via Feedback Assistant (downloadable from the App Store). This carries more weight than a support ticket — it goes directly to the engineering team. Include sample video clips with the screeching and mention the number of affected users in your professional group. The more data points they get, the faster this gets prioritized.

I know none of this is the real fix you need — that has to come from Apple in a future iOS update. But hopefully some of these workarounds help protect your professional output in the meantime.

Try recording without a case. Cases have been know to cause issues with audio recordings.

I’ve a 17 Pro Max and record a fair amount of video and never experienced what you’re describing. I don’t ever use a case or screen protector either. I also only occasionally use the Apple Camera app, preferring Blackmagic Camera.

I understand that you don’t want to use a third party app. However, if your serious about your video, Final Cut Camera are much more advanced and if you’re shooting something for a client or an important event for yourself, consider using a third party app.

I’ve not read or heard of this audio issue from anyone using Blackmagic Camera. There’s plenty of tutorials on YouTube if the settings and controls seem intimidating.

You’re welcome to continue troubleshooting with Apple, but I’d also make sure I have a reliable way to record the times of my life with family, friends and jobs for clients.

I tried finding several or maybe only one post that was made shortly after iPhone 17 was released last September. The OP had odd audio of church music and when we checked settings she had Spatial Audio enabled I asked her to set to stereo or mono and try again. As I recall she never replied.

Are you recording in Spatial Audio? If so, try just mono or stereo. This would also explain why third party apps aren’t having the issue. I don’t know of any third party apps that record Spatial Audio.

Have you reported it to Apple? The best way is to open a support ticket and keep escalating the issue. The next best way is to thoroughly document how to repeat what your experiencing and report it to Apple via the feedback link I shared below.

Your final option is waiting about 6 weeks for iOS 27’s expected release. If it is a bug and not hardware, then hopefully it’s resolved for you.

Thank you for your speedy reply. This is really helpful.

I can't see an app called Feedback Assistant, but this would save time. Could you direct me to the app please?

A member of the Apple team advised me not to use third-party apps such as Black Magic, etc. My preference is to limit any other scope for error.

I can't see any options for "default" in Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual. What would this look like?

I use High Efficiency because of the volume of content captured for clients.

I do have a case on the phone to protect it if it falls. I would assume that the case would cause more than 1-4 sporadic clips to have the audio error noise. Apple has previously requested an image of the case and how it fits around the phone.

Apple has logged videos with the error, logged within 24 hours of the error occurring. However, they haven't been addressed during callbacks. I have to wait on the Apple advisor assigned to my case to reply to my email, and sometimes that takes days, which is too late for the log to register, according to the first advisors I worked with.

The app would be ideal! Thanks.
