Macbook Air won't see SD cards

Macbook Air M2, for some reason now it can't read any SD, micro SD, or camera connected via USB-C. Tried several card readers, osmo action 6, fuji xm5. Various SD and micro SD cards and nothing will show.

SSD thumb drive does show so it's not the ports.

Any ideas?

Well, that's weird! I've had card readers go bad. I've had cables go bad. But I've not seen this.

Are you using a VPN? Do you have "cleaner" apps or "virus catcher" apps?

Honestly , I have no idea, but I'd try these things:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

Let us know what happens…

Does the card show if you open Image Capture, included with macOS?

Image Capture User Guide for Mac - Apple Support

Many SD cards formatted in cameras like my Nikon have a proprietary format that are not recognized by all computers. They do not show in the Finder. Image Capture acts as a format translator to open and view card contents. If IC doesn't work, I'm out of ideas.

It works on your iPhone? Good-- try this: plug the SD card reader into your iPhone and, on your Mac, run iPhone Mirroring. I could see this on my Mac:

and I can open the SD card and manipulate the files. This bypasses the USB Mac's USB port and USB firmware.

Unlock this Card:

Is the there a little which chip on the card? If so, move it up to down; as it may be locked.

Verify it is Seen:

  1. Hold Down: the option key
  2. Click: the Apple menu
  3. Click: System Information
  4. Expand: Hardware (if necessary)
  5. Select: USB
  6. Select: USB bus (likely USB 3.1 bus)
  7. Select: this hub
  8. See if the card is seen.

You mentioned see some cards & cameras. That implies some either were not tested, or some did not work there either. It is important that you provide clear details since we cannot see what you are doing and must rely on how you state things here.....so your words are very important. Did you not test all of the problem cards & cameras, or did some of them also fail to work on both your MBAir and Android tablet?

You inferred incorrectly. Not all SD Cards & card readers are compatible. There are a myriad number of types of SD Cards and some card readers will not read certain types of cards. Even the OS can sometimes play a part in whether certain combinations of hardware are even compatible. I never even heard of some of those card readers you mentioned in your original post. You need to make sure to use a high quality card reader from a respected brand and you need to make sure the card reader is actually compatible with the exact types of SD cards you are using.

Make sure to disconnect all other external devices from the laptop in case one of them is causing a problem. Connect the SD Card reader directly to the laptop. If that still fails, then try connecting the SD Card reader to a powered USB3 hub which is then connected to the laptop.

When checking for whether the SD Card is accessible, it is very important to first check whether the physical card is actually seen by Disk Utility. Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" before the physical drives appear on the left pane of Disk Utility. If the physical drive does not appear, then you have a hardware issue of some sort. And it is critical you inform us if the physical drive is seen or not.

If the physical drive is seen, then we can try addressing why the volume on that drive is not accessible.

I will ask again since it is a very important question.......

I tried every one of those and still nothing! So crazy, it worked not too long ago

What has changed since the last time they worked?

This includes changes to the laptop...both hardware & software as well as any changes to the SD Cards themselves including how they have been used or formatted, or even erased.

And hardware eventually fails. While an SSD may work connected to this adapter, that does not mean the SD Card Reader portion is Ok. Plus that connected SSD may be part of the problem here. Make sure to disconnect that SSD from the adapter and also disconnect all other devices from the laptop other than the card reader and a single SD Card.

Nothing will mount,

Mounting is irrelevant and a whole different problem. The first order of business is knowing whether the physical cards/drives appear on the left pane of Disk Utility using the instructions I provided in my previous post. If the physical drives don't appear, then of course there is nothing to mount. We need to make sure those physical drives appear before we deal with any data & volumes on those cards.

FYI, only refer to "mounting" when you are referencing being able to see/access the drive's icon on the Desktop or the Finder's sidebar. Refer to "connected" when talking about the physical device being shown on the left pane of Disk Utility (or in the case of a camera whether the physical device appears in the Apple System Profiler).

it won't show any SD cards with 2 different card readers. Even cameras plugged in directly which should show the contents through the camera connection

Again, are you using Disk Utility here? Or trying to see them in the Finder or elsewhere? Ignore the Finder and other areas of macOS and confirm whether any cards or camera's appear on the left pane of Disk utility.

Since I'm not sure camera's will show their internal storage in Disk Utility, you can check to see whether the physical camera is visible in the Apple System Profiler under the appropriate section on the left pane (USB, Thunderbolt/USB4). With macOS 26.x Tahoe.....Firewire devices are no longer supported.

Check the Apple System Profiler to confirm whether the SD Card Reader is physical seen under USB or Thunderbolt/USB4 sections. If you don't see a reference to the physical card reader, yet your SSD attached to this multi-adapter is seen, then it implies the card reader portion of the adapter is the problem (try with & without any SD Cards connected).

The cards show in the android and iPhone.
Only thing I can think of is the latest OS update that changed.
I guess I'll wait until the next update and see if anything changes, or wipe out the whole thing and start over

Run the third party app EtreCheck and post the complete report here so we can examine it for possible clues.

I do know that macOS Tahoe tends to need much higher quality cables & adapters than previous versions of macOS. You definitely need to try using a good high quality SD Card Reader from a respected brand......and make sure to confirm it is fully compatible with macOS 26.5 as well. This could explain why you can access the SD Cards on other devices, but not on this laptop running Tahoe. There are a lot of posts on the Apple Discussion forums where people got their external drives & display working again after they replaced their older cables....even new manufacturer supplied cables... with high quality cables which are less than one meter in length.

Just a Hunch… Reinstall the MacOS:

Thumb Drives aren’t officially Solid State Drives(SSD). As for Secure Digital(SD) cards, you’d those on other Mac than you’d. Having overview this entire thread, all of this thread, try a new adapter, (researching compatibility, as previously mentioned). You might even need to use an adapter with external power.

And what happens when you plug this into another Mac —perhaps a friend’s —one not associated to your Apple Account? If it works and all, then maybe you should look into reinstalling the macOS to fix bugs and replace corrupt system files. It will take some time; so, be certain you have the available to to perform the macOS reinstall

About Reinstalling the macOS:

Nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple SupportImportant: Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to performing the reinstall. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall. Once reinstalled, try this once more, seeing if you still get this error.

This was a fresh new clean User account, with no login items and not connected to your Apple account?

So you've tried Safe Mode and a clean User account. You've used more than one reader, more than one connecting cable, and more than one SD card-- is that all correct?

Was able to see some cards and cameras on my android tablet, so it's not the cards or reader

You are using SD cards that can be read by an Android tablet-- is that right? (You said "some cards," and that has me confused.) Do you have an iPhone?

Since you've swapped out everything else, then about the only thing left t do is to find another computer, and try it there. You could go to an Apple Store or probably any place that sells computers-- even trying on a Windows computer would give information.

This combo of card reader and micro SD card does show on my iPhone, and an android tablet. I don't have any other laptops to try it in at the moment

It's strange the SSD thumb drive shows fine but no cards or cameras, even the dji osmo 6 using built in storage mode

Which Nikon would that be? I have had no issue reading SD Cards formatted in a Nikon since 2014 starting with a D3300 and a 2013 iMac with Yosemite through my current set up with M4 MacBook Air with macOS 26.5 and a Nikon D7500. I had used a couple different card readers from two different manufacturers (had to get the second one because I needed uSD capability for a project) and currently with the SD Card reader in my OWC TB dock.

They always mounted in Finder and just did manual drag and drop to destination.

SD Cards were always formatted in camera.
