Hi,

Your coin battery is CR2032 or its compatible battery, though you don't need to replace the battery if your Mac Pro is always connected to AC line.

Like HWTech, the only times I have seen Mac backup batteries going dead rapidly were when the computer was inadvisedly taken off wall power every night. That's the sad voice of experience speaking.

My office moved from a main building with very well-controlled power to an older facility down the road with less-than-great power feeds. In self-defense, I added an uninterruptible backup power supply and turned the Mac off at the UPS every night, The PRAM batt was dead in two months.

Realizing the tech sin I'd committed, I replaced the internal battery and stopped cutting wall power to the Mac, instead relying on the UPS for take care of nighttime blackout or surge issues. Mischief managed—the computer still had a useable PRAM batt when I retired 8 year later.

However I also agree with HWTech that, in this section, we first need to have the OP clearly confirm that they are not asking about a laptop before answering. I've seen times where ¼ to ⅓ of the "Mac Pro" section posts were about Mac laptops or old PowerMac G5 towers.

Not often as long as the computer is connected to power, but if left disconnected from power they can become depleted. Some people do tend to use a power strip to power off all their devices so it is a possiblity.

Re-reading the post I think you may be the one who had the correct interpretation. Maybe the OP will check back and confirm which one it is since people have posted laptop related questions to the desktop Mac Pro forum before. If your interpretation is correct, then the OP should think twice about it.

I have an old iMac (2012) and old mini (2011) that I keep plugged in on the remote chance I should ever want to use them again. I recall in days of yore that replacing pram batteries was more a challenge in finding a half-AA than actually getting it into a machine. With an iMac I suspect it is akin to brain surgery.

see page 112 in the manual cited.

Mac Pro 2019 model uses a slightly different size, which used to use the readily available CR2032
