Best file server for Mac? I want to use an old Dell server for home backups. I can run Windows GPT NTFS or Ubuntu with EXT4. What is the better file server for large complex file bundles like .photoslibrary?
Neither; the Photos library can only be safely stored on a volume formatted as APFS or Mac OS Extended. If encapsulated in a disk image using one of those formats, EXT4 is generally better for NAS volumes; click here for more information.

Thanks for that. Important advice. I see that a possible workaround is copying a disk image from the server and backing up to that. This server would not of course be the only backup for the Photos files. I have a lot of recording studio backups and they will live anywhere quite happily. So it's mostly for them; and videos.
