When my vpn is turned on I used to get a dot on my dynamic island, but it has disappeared. There was also a popup of some kind on my Apple Watch 7. Don't know what I may have done but they have disappeared.

If it was hidden, then try swiping the Dynamic Island left ← or → right to reveal it.

The dot sounds like it may be privacy indicators, which appear as orange or green to indicate to you whether the microphone or camera are in use by an application on your iPhone.

If a VPN is hiding that, that can be a privacy concern as you would be oblivious to what applications are using your microphone and camera. We do not know why that would happen with a VPN, but we do know VPN's are notorious for interfering with an iPhone, and are not suggested if it is a public VPN since they don't provide the heightened security as advertised, and actually sell your data to advertisers.
Thanks all. Swiping the island did show the VPN indicator on my phone - thanks @Smilin-Brian. The VPN popup and indicator on my watch have returned although I don't know what I did to bring it back.
