iPad not detected by MacBook Air after reboot, needs replug

iPad 13" M2 connected via Apple USB-C cable to my Macbook Air M4: not detected after reboot. I have to unplug and replug after a reboot from the Macbook. Is this normal?

The "Allow accessories to connect" in the "Privacy & Security" System Settings is set to "Always when unlocked".

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.7

Hello,

no, what you are facing is not normal for your MacBook Air M4 to continually require an unplug/replug to detect the iPad after a reboot. The "Always allow when unlocked" accessory setting should allow the connection as soon as your Mac is awake.

Try this:

  1. Temporarily change your accessory security to Always allow in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessories. Restart your Mac, test it, and then switch it back to "Always when unlocked" to see if the reset fixes the glitch.
  2. Make sure both the MacBook Air M4 (macOS) and the iPad Pro M2 (iPadOS) are fully updated to the latest software versions. this may help communication between devices, extremely different OS can cause a bit of lagging.
  3. The usb-c cable may be damaged, it transfers power, but the communication pins have a problem.

Thanks, and I hope this helps

SOLVED:

This seems to be normal behavior. Found some neighbours and friends with a Macbook Air M4 and they all behave the same way.

MacBook Air M4

Clean DFU Restore completed successfully

Issue persists immediately after restore

Occurs with both iPad and iPhone

Occurs with Apple USB-C cable and Thunderbolt cable

USB/data works, charging does not resume after reboot until physical replug

Feedback sent to Apple…

I went to the Genius bar today and they said this is "Normal behaviour".

I would like to know from other Macbook Air M4 13" if this is the case.

  • I installed Tahoe again yesterday
  • Went to the Genius bar :)
  • Did a DFU Revive just a few minutes ago
  • What remains is a full restore which I don't fancy btw. Unless a restore afterwards from backup makes sense.

If someone with Macbook Air M4 13" can confirm:

  • start Macbook M4
  • hook up an iPhone via cable -> check if it's charging
  • restart Macbook M4
  • check if iPhone is charging

Mine is not, stops charging, iPads/iPhones, the USB connection is there, but PD stops.

Other USB2 devices act normally.

Thanks for the prompt reply! And thanks for clarifying that "this is not normal". I thought it was some wierd Apple snag. So the saga continues then.

This forum is sort of a almost last resort :-) I tried 4 new Apple USB-C cables, switched around the settings, I'm suspecting a iPad <-> Macbook privacy issue in "Allow accessoiry to connect".

Pre reboot, i use this command in the terminal:

> ioreg -p IOUSB -w0 | grep -i ipad

  | +-o iPad@00100000 <class IOUSBHostDevice, id 0x10000606a, registered, matched, active, busy 0 (272 ms), retain 58>

After reboot:
> ioreg -p IOUSB -w0 | grep -i ipad
>

No connection detected on the USB-C side. Replugging solves this, I'm a bit out of options...
