Mac mini M4 & Studio Display: Brightness control locked when booting from external NVMe

Hi everyone,


I’m experiencing a consistent bug with my new Mac mini M4 and Apple Studio Display.


I boot macOS from an external NVMe SSD via Thunderbolt. Every time I perform a cold boot, the brightness control for the Studio Display is locked/grayed out.


It seems like a Thunderbolt bus handshake issue: the M4 chip prioritizes the boot drive traffic and fails to initialize the monitor's data channel.


The only way to fix it is to hot-plug the Thunderbolt cable after the OS has loaded. This is quite frustrating for a premium setup.


Is anyone else seeing this on the M4? Any word on a firmware fix?

Yes, this cold-boot Thunderbolt handshake bug involving external boot drives and high-end peripherals is a known quirk on Apple Silicon M-series setups. The M4 host controller prioritizes the PCIe enumeration of the external NVMe boot volume during early boot, occasionally timing out or failing to poll the DDC/I2C data channel needed for Studio Display brightness control. There is no official standalone firmware fix released specifically for this edge case yet.

Potential Workarounds & Fixes

  • Rearrange Port Topology: Move your external SSD and the Apple Studio Display to separate Thunderbolt controller busses if possible (on the Mac mini M4, separate ports map to different pairs/sides), preventing them from fighting for initial priority on the same bus root. 
  • Use a Powered Thunderbolt Dock: Route your external NVMe SSD through a powered Thunderbolt 4/5 dock or connect the Studio Display through a daisy-chain path rather than sharing the Mac mini's rear ports directly.
