You bought it "new" from who exactly? When a warranty date shows as 1978, that is typically because the phone is NOT new, but is refurbished. When you open Settings > General > About - does the model number begin with a number like 3 or 5? I would also believe a phone manufactured in August 2025, hasn't just been sitting on shelf somewhere all these months as iPhone 17 Pro has been extremely popular and sells out quickly, even today.

If you didn't buy the phone from Apple directly or an actual Apple Authorized Seller, you bought a "gray market" phone and there's no telling what you actually bought, regardless of what they may have told you.

No one can say for certain because you won’t share important details. An iPhone 17 Pro showing a warranty expired in 1978 likely means the device is not new and has no warranty coverage. This incorrect date is often a placeholder indicating the phone was refurbished by a third party, not by Apple, and therefore has no warranty with Apple.

If you purchased the phone as new, you should return it to the seller. If you believe the date is an error for a new device, you can contact Apple Support to correct the purchase date, though you will need the original sales receipt.

You're not answering all of our questions and this back and forth is rather pointless. We still don't know WHO exactly you purchased the phone from and whether they are a true authorized Apple reseller.

Since this is a user to user only forum, you need to contact Apple directly. No one here works for Apple or has anything to do with iPhone warranty.

We also don't know where you are located in the world? If you're in the US, you can call Apple at: 800-MY-APPLE. If you're not in the US, here is a link for you contact Apple --> Contact - Official Apple Support

I remain confident my comment that a brand new iPhone 17 Pro manufactured in August 2025, didn't sit on a shelf unsold with any authorized seller for 10 months.

The "warranty" on the used or possibly refurbished phone that you bought will never activate with Apple.

You might have purchased the phone from an "iPhone specialist" or whatever they claimed to be, but you did not likely buy the phone from an authorized Apple reseller.

If you did, the seller would have reported the sale to Apple and your warranty would be activated at that time.

Does the name of the seller appear when you check the list of authorized sellers in your area?

If not, return the phone for a refund. You bought a used phone that has no warranty. There was a reason that the phone looked like a "good deal".
