Mac mini does not sleep on first attempt with BenQ monitor

Greetings,

New Macmin M4 in December.

Finally set up last week as I needed a monitor and research over time indicated BENQs products appeared to be compatible so I bought one.

BenQ EW2790U.

Jury is still out on the monitor and it may go back.

Problem:

Mac will not sleep from the Apple dropdown or hot corners on the 1st attempt.

Click sleep, screen goes black for a heartbeat then comes back on.

2nd attempt puts it to sleep although sometimes it takes 2 or 3 attempts.

Wakes from sleep no problem when requested.

BENQ techies had me do every thing I had done with no resolve. BenQ is starting to point fingers at the M4 but no sure they are up to speed on Tahoe/M4 system settings.

Monitor terminated via USB C provided. Swapped it with an OWC USB C Thunderbolt 5 purchased as they told me none came in the box, which it did.......anyway, No good,same.prob.

Verified OSD options on the monitor for USB C cable connection.Appear to be OK.

BENQ said try an HDMI.

I told them its advertised as USBC and HDMI compatible so it should not affect "Sleep Mode" and I have selected UCB-C termination from the monitor menu.

I feel it may be a MacMini setting but I am unsure on all the system settings.

Something is hindering the 1st sleep request causing it to stay on

Any suggestions would greatly help as I am getting ready to send it back for something a a bit more basic. I bought it because of the recommends and additional ports provided on the monitor, allowing further expansion.

Thanks

1) What mouse are you using to activate Sleep from the dropdown menu..?

I'm asking because any mouse movement during those first few moments will rewake the Mac mini.

2) Sleep from the dropdown menu and display Off using a Hot corner are two different things.

Computer Sleep from the dropdown menu sleep the Mac mini, the display and some USB functions.

Display Off, sometimes referred to as display sleep, only shuts off the display and leaves the system active.

3) The display should not cause a sleep issue connected directly to the Mac mini via HDMI or USB-C.

You may have trouble, if the display and mouse are connected to a hub or the mouse is using the display as a USB hub.

May begetting warmer. Will see.

Last 5 or 6 sessions, sleep awake etc I am finding this:

To sleep I open the Apple drop down and move the cursor down to the sleep button, click the sleep button “using the mouse”, and don’t touch, move, shake go near the mouse, unit sleeps as advertised BUT comes immediatly back on as it done since day 1. Grrrrrr

Plot thickens…..….

If I open the Apple drop down and then scroll down to the sleep button, BUT initiate sleep by using the Enter/Return key vs the mouse it sleeps and stays asleep until I initiate an request.

Looking to me like a MacMouse issue. This one is from my 2013 IMac and I see there have been upgrades to the MajicM.

Although it wake immediatly up using a hardwired Logitech mouse so still stumped on that.

Its like a ghost signal is transmitting from the mouse or its ultra sensitive.

I can live with the “Plot Thickens” sleep scenario I outlined above, will research 3rd party mice and see what’s up there.

I know the WIFI version in my 2013IMac is inferior to the WIFI version in the MacMin so maybe same goes with Bluetooth and mouse, unfamiliar with bluetooth theory…..

Thanks

So many users have had problems with the Sleep mode when it comes out of sleep that they do the following as a workaround:

1 - do not sleep the computer.

2 - set the System ➙ Energy ➙ Low Power Mode settings pane turn on the button "Prevent automatic sleeping when display is off'.

3 - in System ➙ Lock Screen settings pane set "Start Screen Saver when inactive" to whatever time you'd like.

4 - in System ➙ Settings ➙ Lock Screen settings pane set "Turn display off monitor when inactive for XX" to the time you want.

Unless you have several old HDDs you don't need to sleep the computer as most all new drives are solid state.

Perhaps you should consider this workaround.

I've used this system for several years from Intel iMacs to Silicon Mac Mini M4s with no problem.

Thanks. I swapped out the Majic M I used with mt 2013 iMac with a hardwired Logitech, same result

I did consider excessive motion to the mouse after a sleep request, tried to isolate that as a problem source still looking at it ?

I have zero perif's connected to either device Mac has a mon and BenQ has a Mac via USB-C, that's is it.

I used the hot corners for test purposes, got the response I knew I would get and turned it off.

Never use never will.

I'll eyeball your links sent see what I see.

Appreciate the help
