Using an HP 460 keyboard, there is a long lag before the keyboard works after it goes int sleep mode. Do I just buy another keyboard?

Maybe ... However, a long delay before the HP 460 keyboard becomes responsive after sleep can be caused by several factors and does not necessarily mean the keyboard itself is defective.

Some of those factors could be:

  • The keyboard entering a deep power-saving mode and taking time to re-establish its wireless connection after inactivity.
  • Bluetooth or wireless USB receiver communication delays when the Mac wakes from sleep.
  • macOS power management settings affecting how quickly Bluetooth devices reconnect.
  • Outdated keyboard firmware or macOS updates that may impact wireless device wake behavior.
  • Wireless interference from other nearby devices operating on the 2.4 GHz spectrum.

So, is there anything you can try before considering replacing this keyboard? Yes:

  1. Verify whether the keyboard is connected via Bluetooth or the HP USB wireless receiver.
  2. Install any available macOS updates on the Mac mini.
  3. Check for firmware updates for the HP 460 keyboard, if available from HP.
  4. If using Bluetooth, remove the keyboard from macOS Bluetooth settings and pair it again.
  5. If using the USB receiver, try connecting the receiver to a different USB port, preferably one with a direct connection rather than through a hub.
  6. Disable any aggressive power-saving settings related to Bluetooth devices, if applicable.
  7. Test the keyboard with another computer to determine whether the issue follows the keyboard or remains specific to the Mac mini.
