How do I get iMessages to finish indexing on my iPhone?

How do I get iMessages to finish indexing? I've been seeing the "More results will be shown once Messages finishes indexing" result when I try to search my messages for several months now.

It seems like I'm only able to see messages from mid march onwards. For example, when I search "hi" in my messages I'm able to see messages dating back to 3/13/2026. I have my messages saved forever.

Is there any way I can fix this? I've tried restarting my phone and have cleared a lot of storage, but I'm still stuck.

Hi,

To get iMessages to finish indexing on your iPhone 16, ensure the device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network and plugged into a power source, then turn off Low Power Mode to allow background tasks to proceed without interruption.

If indexing is stuck or excessively slow, perform these targeted fixes in order:

Toggle iCloud Messages: Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Messages and turn the switch off, select Disable and Download Messages, then turn it back on to restart the sync and indexing process.

Reset Siri & Search Index: Navigate to Settings > Siri & Search > Messages and toggle all switches off, restart your iPhone, then toggle them back on to force a fresh search index rebuild.

Check Storage and Settings: Ensure you have at least 5–10 GB of free space and verify that Date & Time are set to automatic in Settings > General > Date & Time.

Wait for Completion: Indexing can take several hours or up to a full day for large message histories; leave the phone locked and idle rather than repeatedly restarting it.
