iPad Activation Lock removal request status

Activation Lock Removal Request – Status and Support Concerns

Case# ***

I am requesting assistance regarding an Activation Lock removal request for my iPad (10th Generation).

Following Apple's published instructions, I submitted all of the required documentation through the Activation Lock Support request process, including:

  • Original purchase receipt
  • iPad serial number
  • All other requested ownership information

The request was submitted 8 days ago, and I have not received an approval, denial, or status update.

Since submitting the request, I have contacted Apple Support multiple times through chat to determine the status. Unfortunately, each conversation has resulted in conflicting information:

  • Support agents have been unable to determine the status of my request.
  • I have been told the request is "being processed," but no estimated completion time has been provided.
  • Another agent referred me to visit an Apple Store for assistance.
  • My understanding is that Activation Lock removal requests are handled by Apple's specialized support team and cannot be completed by retail store employees. If that is correct, I do not understand why I was referred to a store.

I would appreciate clarification on the following:

  1. What is the current status of my Activation Lock removal request?
  2. Has my documentation been received and reviewed?
  3. Is any additional information required from me?
  4. If the request is still pending, what is the expected processing time?

I have complied with all of Apple's published requirements and simply need an accurate status update or guidance on the next steps.

Thank you for your assistance.

Mike

For the documentation provided, was this the original purchase receipt from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller where the serial number is printed on that documentation. No other Proof of Ownership information is required or even relevant as Apple does not get involved in third party sales and are not in the business of validating third party receipts. If the device was in Lost Mode, even the original purchase receipt is irrelevant as the request will not be granted as seen in the Support Document.

As for progress of the request, typically it takes about 14 days but as seen posted here it could be up to 30 days and the response will be given to you in the email provided without any status updates, beyond when the decision has been made.

If you are only on day 8, it is not unusual that an update/decision has not be given yet. You will simply need to wait and an Apple Support representative cannot speed up the process or give you the status of the request.

First, please understand the Apple Support Community is a user-to-user technical forum. Contributors here are all end-users, just like you. Other than the site Moderators, Apple neither monitor nor participate here. As such, if you anticipate that Apple Support will see, act upon, or reply to your posts made here, you will be disappointed.

If you have a pre-owned device, you may have a significant problem...

If the iPad disabled or Activation Locked, unless you can independently obtain assistance from the previous owner, the iPad is (and will remain) useless to you. If you are able to contact the original owner, they will require this information:

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Here are the Apple support pages that outline the Activation Lock - and the only mechanisms by which it can be satisfied:

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Turn off Activation Lock – Apple Support

As you will discover, unless you are the owner of the AppleID that was last used to activate the device, you’ll not be able to defeat or bypass the Activation Lock. With documentary evidence that you are the original owner (such as the original sales receipt showing the serial number), Apple may be prepared to assist - otherwise they and nobody here will be able to help you.

Here is what Apple suggests when purchasing a previously used device:

Check for Activation Lock before you buy a device from someone else

Before you buy an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, from someone other than Apple or an authorized Apple reseller, make sure that the device is erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s account. Follow these steps to check if the device is ready to use:

  1. Turn on and unlock the device.
  2. If the passcode lock screen or the Home screen appears, the device hasn't been erased. Ask the seller to completely erase the device by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Don't take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it's been erased.
  3. Begin the device setup process.
  4. If you're asked for the previous owner’s Apple ID and password, the device is still linked to their account. Hand the device back to the seller and ask them to enter their password. If the previous owner isn't present, contact them as soon as possible and ask them to use a browser to remove the device from their account. Don't take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it has been removed from the previous owner’s account.

You will know that a device is ready for you to use when you're asked to "Set up your iPhone," “Set up your iPad," or “Set up your iPod” the first time you turn it on.

Thanks for the reply. The ipad was purchased at Best Buy and the receipt sent to support did have the serial # on it.

You should be good as long as this was a new product purchase from BestBuy and not through their MarketPlace where used or refurbished devices are being sold. Best Buy does not verify the authenticity/ownership of products they sell in their Marketplace and neither does Apple.

In any case, I assume this was a new product purchase, and you should be hearing a response from Apple shortly.
