iMac to iPhone music sync stuck with Cloud Library conflict

Trying to sync music on IMac to iPhone. When I connect iPhone to IMac, this message shows: "To sync music from this Mac, turn off Cloud Music Library." However when you open Music on the Mac, to do just that it tells you that after your music has been uploaded to the "Cloud", syncing will start. Right now all I see is "Syncing (Step 1 of 6) - Waiting for sync to start." It's been doing that for the last half hour. Why isn't it syncing?

Hi Docbruce, this is a classic conflict between iCloud Music Library (Apple Music) and local USB syncing — they can't run simultaneously. Here's how to resolve it:

The core issue: When iCloud Music Library is enabled on your iPhone, iTunes/Music on Mac cannot do a traditional USB sync. That's what the "Turn off Cloud Music Library" message is telling you.

You have two options depending on what you'd prefer:

Option A — Keep using iCloud Music Library (recommended):

1. Don't connect via USB for music — your music will sync wirelessly through iCloud automatically.

2. On your Mac, open Music > Music menu > Preferences > General and make sure "Sync Library" is enabled.

3. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Music and make sure "Sync Library" is turned ON.

4. Once all tracks are uploaded to iCloud, they'll appear on your iPhone automatically — no USB needed.

Option B — Switch to USB/Wi-Fi syncing (turns off iCloud Music Library):

1. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Music > Sync Library and turn it OFF.

2. On your Mac, open Music, connect your iPhone via USB, and sync normally.

Note: This will remove any tracks added via Apple Music streaming from your iPhone.

The "Syncing Step 1 of 6 - Waiting for sync to start" message happens when Music is stuck in a loop trying to resolve this conflict. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPhone after choosing one of the above options should clear it up.

Hope this helps clarify things!
