Video stuttering in mirrored set up on Mac mini

In my golf simulator, I have a BenQ HD projector connected to the HDMI port on my 2023 M2 Mac Mini with 16GB of memory which is supposed to have plenty of horsepower to run the graphics at max resolution. My HD TV is connected to my Mac from a USB-C/Thunderbolt port to an adapter to (USB-C to HDMI) to plug into my TV. Both displays worked. But because Skytrak doesn’t support dual displays, I had to set the Mac to a mirror the displays. This is where the stuttering comes in. If I set the BenQ to be the primary display for the mirrored TV, the projector screen does NOT stutter but the TV display does. If I switch it so that the TV is the primary display for the mirrored BenQ, the stuttering follows the mirrored display. I solved this by using an HDMI splitter plugged into the HDMI port of the Mac and sending the same signal to both the BenQ and the HD TV. No more stuttering. But I wanted the two different connections so I could potentially swap out the HD TV with a 4K TV. Is there any way to alleviate the stuttering in mirroring to the secondary display?

Hello kentmcpherson,

This stuttering is simply due to the fact that your Mac is trying to synchronize two screens that do not have exactly the same refresh rate (Hz). To adjust this, go to System Settings > Monitors, click on each of your screens and make sure they are manually set to the same frequency (for example 60 Hz both). In the mirroring options, also check "Optimized for" by choosing the screen that jerked, this will force the Mac to stabilize its image as a priority, and the power of your M2 Pro will do the rest without problem :)

Thank you for your feedback. If the frequencies are the same and optimization simply moves the problem, it's probably because of the vertical sync (V-Sync) that macOS only applies to the main screen in mirror mode. To get around this, try changing the resolution of the mirror screen in System Settings > Monitors by choosing a "standard" resolution (such as the native 1080p) rather than a scaled version. If this persists, an excellent software alternative is to go back to "Extended Desktop" mode and use a free application like OBS Studio, you just have to open a preview window of your simulator on the second screen, which completely eliminates the stuttering of native mirroring.
