Hotmail Exchange Activesync

With the release of the new Exchange Active sync for hotmail accounts I was able to setup my iphone and ipad for exchange active sync but when I try remove my hotmail account from the mail app and setup my account it automatically makes it pop3, is there someway to overide this that I'm missing or is it not possible to use exchange active sync in the mail app yet?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Personally, having used both, I prefer Hotmail... The interface is really nice, and Exchange ActiveSync on the iPhone/iPod works beautifully. Not to mention Hotmail also gives you Office Web Apps and 25GB of free online storage. I also love the message "sweep" feature. It also has an option for conversation view if you like that (and Google has finally offered an option to shut this off).

Most people you ask will probably say Gmail simply because they love anything by Google and hate anything by Microsoft. And it probably seems like "everyone" is using Gmail, but in actuality the number of active Gmail users is about half the number of active Hotmail users (Yahoo is #1).

My advice is simple -- put them both through the paces, get a feel for how both work, and decide which you like the best.

It seems people in the US are always going on about Gmail, but over here in the UK, i think a lot more people are actually using Hotmail!

What e-mail client did you use to access your Hotmail account using mBox Mail for Mac? Is it OSX's built-in Mail client? Which OS version are you using?

I do have a question regarding Hotmail. If I use mbox mail for the mac, will it also sync my calendar to outlook 2011?

Unfortunately, no... but here's some things that might make your life nicer with Hotmail...

Calendar and Contact sync is something that the Hotmail Connector will do on the PC version of Outlook 2010, but no such thing exists in the Mac Outlook 2011. The next Microsoft Office (Office 15 which is in closed Alpha currently) may bring something like this to all platforms - it is a radical redesign internally and has to run on new devices (like the Windows ARM-based tablets). However, don't hold your breath...

mBox will do your mail and folders (it converts Hotmail to IMAP locally). It can be used with Sparrow, Outlook, and Mail.app. Probably Thunderbird and Zimbra too. So it's "mail only".

But you can at least get a little more out of Hotmail...

If you take your Hotmail Calendar and select "Share This Calendar" and get an ICS link to share (with yourself). Then you can open iCal on your Mac and treat your Hotmail Calendar as a "Shared Calendar". But it is "Read Only". Outlook's calendar doesn't do that. Why? Who knows...

Remember - you must make appointments on your iPhone / iPad or the Hotmail Web Client. But at least reminders will show up on your Mac.

Your contacts can't exactly sync with Outlook 2011, but it's actually very easy to do periodically. Once you get a good set from your iPhone, visit your Hotmail in Safari, export your Contacts as a CSV file and go through the Import process into Outlook. You map a few fields, and then the import will happen.

Always update contacts from your iPhone or Hotmail, and then export them as a CSV. The import process is actually 1 click after you do that "mapping" process once. So that's nice.

Still have your contacts in Address Book? Well, there's a way around that, but it's not straightforward. It works well, but involves Address Book export, import to Gmail, and Export from Gmail to Outlook Format and Import to Hotmail. Then you switch your iPhone to use Hotmail for your contacts.

The benefit there is that you can have all your contacts in "the cloud" in case of hard drive fail, and for use in Hotmail.

Now...

Visit SkyDrive and get your SkyDrive app for iPhone, iPad, and MacOS and you will be able to get your iDisk back. If you click on "Manage Storage" you can see if you can get above 7GB (the default) for free (some users get an offer for 25GB)!

Mac Office will save documents there if you want and you can edit them in Safari, view them in the iPad, and even take notes in OneNote in the iPad / Safari.

Anyway... that's one way to do things.
