Hotmail Exchange Activesync

With the release of the new Exchange Active sync for hotmail accounts I was able to setup my iphone and ipad for exchange active sync but when I try remove my hotmail account from the mail app and setup my account it automatically makes it pop3, is there someway to overide this that I'm missing or is it not possible to use exchange active sync in the mail app yet?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

press option key while clicking on continue button, and it should let you do manual settings.
i already tried to set ActiveSync with mac mail, it doesn't work.

edit: I thought you were on OS X, sorry...

You can’t and probably never will be able to do so. Hotmail access using Exchange Activesync is only for mobiles.

Think of it this way: Companies pay big money to Microsoft to use Exchange as email for their organizations. Microsoft can’t make Hotmail for Exchange via desktop, because then nobody would pay them for the Exchange servers. Every company would use free Hotmail and get free Exchange with it (which is bad for Microsoft)

I tried the option key and that allowed me to customize settings but I was still unable to get it to work. I used the settings found here:

Neither exchange 2007 or exchange imap worked for me, anyone else have any luck?

@heytaxi: Even if this doesn't work with the baked in mail app now it will eventually, companies pay big money to Microsoft to use Exchange for email so they have security, customization and control there is already a free desktop app from MS for windows that will sync with hotmail it's just a matter of time before apple updates mail or MS released a mac app.

Microsoft has only enabled Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) on their Hotmail servers. This supports only mobile devices.

To enable you to connect Apple Mail or Microsoft Entourage, Microsoft will need to enable Exchange Web Services on their Hotmail servers. They have not done this and they have made no announcement that they will do this.

Does anybody know how to suggest features to Apple? Right now all my Windows Live contacts are in the cloud, and it’d make things so much simpler to be able to pull this onto my mac...

Thanks for suggesting mBox Mail for Mac, it works brilliantly!! God knows how they manage to get Hotmail working via IMAP, but it does, its like magic, I wish I knew how they did it! lol
Do you know of a similar app but for Windows?? Many thanks!!

For windows you can use Microsoft's windows live mail desktop. It's similar to outlook but its just a desktop client for you to connect to your web accounts. You can use it for your hotmail or live account, as well as connect to gmail, yahoo, etc. At least you could when i was using it, back when i had a PC.

No, I meant is there a similar app to mBox Mail for Mac, but for Windows? In other words, a Windows app that does the same thing as mBox Mail, which is to allow Hotmail to be accessed by a desktop email client by IMAP not POP3?

As kurtish mentioned, the free Windows Live Mail (part of Windows Live Essentials) IS the Windows equivalent to mBox Mail. It provides fully synced desktop access to your email, contacts, and calendar. If you want to use Outlook instead, you can install the free Outlook Connector to access mail, contacts, and calendar. Both solutions are full bi-directional "Exchange-like" sync. It is NOT POP3 access.

If I wanted to use Thunderbird, for example, it would only work through POP3 though, is this correct?

Yes, you can access Hotmail in Thunderbird (or any email client) via POP3. But I highly recommend using Windows Live Mail instead -- it's a lot nicer than Thunderbird and you can access any email account in it.

Yeah, I thought so, thanks for confirming that for me!
My reason for asking these questions is because I going from MobileMe, to a free email provider, either Hotmail or Gmail. I already have both accounts, but will only be using one and I'm trying to decide which one I should use! I must admit to liking Hotmail's interface, but most people seem to say go with Gmail. It seems Hotmail is making a lot of good progress, but what do I know!
What do you guys think? Which one would you use?
