How to improve Mac mini M4 cooling for gaming and prevent internal fan stress?

I got a Mac Mini M4 for my wife that is being used for gaming, primarily World of Warcraft. It’s being ran at 60FPS and as a result, the top of it get’s hot to the touch. We do have the Mac Fan Control app and boost the fan speed to a constant 3750rpm, sometimes higher if necessary. If we don’t, everything starts to stutter because of the high internal temps.


It got me thinking, I know the case is designed to be a heat sink of its own, but it just doesn’t feel like it’s keeping up. I’m actually considering getting a PC CPU heatsink to put on top of the Mac Mini to help with heat dissipation and to lower the stress on the internal fans cause I’m sure boosting them up every day has got to be taking a toll on them.


My biggest concern, is putting thermal paste on the casing and the apple logo on top, will it cause damage to the exterior case? Additionally, would this cause interference with the internal WiFi? I know I’ve read several reviews of docking stations causing the WiFi problem.

Hello Jour,

Do not put thermal paste on the housing: it will stain the aluminum and a block of metal on top will block the Wi-Fi. To best cool the Mac mini M4, the easiest solution is to raise it slightly with pads or use a ventilated laptop stand. Fresh air being sucked from the bottom, clearing the bottom is much more effective. Finally, don't worry about the fan, it's designed to run fast without getting damaged, you can let macOS manage this automatically. Have a nice day :)

I have a couple thoughts.


Adding thermal paste and an exterior heat sink just sounds like a bad idea. Interesting and innovative, but bad.

If gaming is so important to you and your wife, then this Mac mini is likely not the best choice of computer for that task. Macs have never been known as the better platform vs PC for gaming, nor even a very good platform. Better to get your hands on an inexpensive PC or gaming console than to coat your Mac mini with thermal paste and kludge together a heat sink to the exterior.


As for the question of wi-fi interference... who could really say? Of course the potential is there, but one would never know until it was tried. Not many are willing to try that particular setup.


I would simply avoid taking that step.

There can be software causes. If you have installed unneeded anti-virus, "cleaning/optimizing" or VPN software, those can run up temps.


I second the suggestion to use risers to let more air under the Mini. I'd say 3/4 inch/20mm should suffice.


Your Mini has built-in thermal protection. If the computer does not seem to slow while playing the game, the internal monitors are not worrying. In the presence of potentially damaging heat, the first thing the built-in systems do is to clock back the processor to reduce its workload. If that does not help, the computer will do a safety shutdown. Not sure about now, but "back in the day," thermal shutdowns happened with no advisory messages.
