Help deleting and reinstalling MacOS

Help. I Can erase my Mac.

Imac 5k core i9 2020 with SSD.

I add multiple crashs. I log in safe mode to get ride of the login items. And I look at the extentions. I made the mistake to switch off FileVault. It spin for a while and a message was saying File decrypted or something like that.

I reboot and when it is time to log, my password, or any other user, will work.

And I know my password by heart for many year's, and i mush have enter it 10 time in the last hour.

And than it ask me for my security key, I find it, check it twice and it won't work.

So I am left with having to delete my disk.

Now the recovery partition won't let me use the Utility, I only have Boot drive and erase disk.

When I try erase, It will not, saying "Couldn't open device.: (-69877)".

I try internet boot, I see the Planet and it Take a long time to load, but it the same thing, it won't work.

Finally I try One of my back-up, And it telling me I am not allow.

I am lost, confuse and out of things to try.

I am not covered by Apple care. I don't know if they will help me, or charge for the service.

I just want to erase my mac!

Anybody have a guess!

iMac 27″, macOS 26.3

There is 3 différents (Key shortcut) recovery available.

I can do anything in most recent version except Target mode.

If I try to reinstall an MacOS with the older Disk Utility ? it will probably have a hard time reading the disk

Here what I got so far, and I don't have access to the Terminal

If I boot with Option-Command-R

Open in Recovery assistant, there is no Disk Utility showing

  • Recovery assistant Menu: About R.A., Change language, Erase Mac

The assistant write " There are no Users on this volume to recover ", "Restart"

  • Apple menu there is Startup disk, Restart, and Shut down.

In "Startup disk" it show "Macintosh HD macOS 26.3", I can choose it and restart and I can reboot in Target mode.

I don't have access to Terminal

If I boot with  Command-R

If I boot with Shift+Option+Command+R

I have to authenticate with AppleID.

It bring me to Disk Utility 10.15.7 with Apple menu, File, Edit,Utility and Window.

The current Window: as Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall macOS, Get online help, and Disk Utility

Hello irayspot, and welcome to the Apple Support Community.

Based on what you’ve described, you’ve already completed most of the standard software troubleshooting steps. The fact that local RecoveryInternet Recovery, and erasing the disk all fail with the “Couldn’t open device (-69877)” error suggests that the issue may no longer be limited to macOS itself.

I recommend checking the following:

  1. Start your Mac in macOS Recovery and open Disk Utility.
  2. Choose View > Show All Devices.
  3. Select the physical SSD at the top of the sidebar and try erasing the device itself, not just the APFS volume.
  4. If erasing the physical device still fails with error -69877, it may indicate that the SSD or its storage structure can no longer be repaired using software tools.

In that case, I recommend having the Mac inspected by Apple. Even without AppleCare, an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider can perform a hardware diagnostic.

If a hardware repair is required, there may be a service charge.

Could you let us know whether the physical SSD appears in Disk Utility when Show All Devices is enabled, and whether the -69877 error also occurs when attempting to erase the physical device?

Please let us know the outcome.

Have a great day.

And one more thing…

Never forget to think different.

As of now, I am unable to boot into MacOS, I am lock-out

I seem short for the complete disk, It lasted a long minute.

Ho...no! <...my password, or any other user, ...> I mean will Not work!

<Again, sounds like some very rare corruption issue with your SSD. Likely failing.

Now the recovery partition won't let me use the Utility, I only have Boot drive and erase disk.

Please explain. What do you mean by "Boot drive?" While in Disk Utility, did you select Show All Devices from the View popup menu?>

I meanI have only 2 think available, I can select a boot drive, it for Target mode I think and Erase

<When I try erase, It will not, saying "Couldn't open device.: (-69877)".

What exactly are you trying to erase?>

My disk, so I can reinstall a backup

< I try internet boot, I see the Planet and it Take a long time to load, but it the same thing, it won't work.

Some networks and router settings make it difficult to connect to Apple's servers.>

Finally found that the Internet Boot did not fonction and the boot when back to the disk recovery

<Finally I try One of my back-up, And it telling me I am not allow.

Not allowed to do what?>

I had the message that I was not allowed to boot from the backup Disk

<I just want to erase my mac!

Based on what you have posted, that may not be possible. Do you have an Apple Store or Authorized Repair Center nearby?>

I still have a few thing to try, since I finally was able to log onto the internet recovery.

I did run SOS and it talk about "error log tells us ... Severe File System Corruption" See Jul 3, 2026 5:08 PM in response to irayspot

Here where I am. (all go fast, i am out of time for now).

The internet recovery didn't work the first time.

I succeed ultimately, now disk utility is saying Impossible de monter « Macintosh HD -

Data » (Erreur

com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter

49229.)

Here what SOS on HD -Data said:

Exécution de S.O.S. sur « Macintosh HD - Data » (disk2s4)

Repairing file system.

Volume is already unmounted.

Performing fsck_apfs -y -x /dev/rdisk2s4

Checking the container superblock.

Checking the EFl jumpstart record.

Checking the space manager.

error: spaceman chunk disk address out of order: 0x60000000k)350000,

Space manager is invalid.

The volume /dev/rdisk2s4 could not be verified completely.

File system check exit code is 0.

Restoring the original state found as unmounted.

AI:

error log tells us exactly what went wrong and confirms two critical findings:The Version Mismatch: The log shows container has been mounted by APFS version 2632... which is newer than 1412.... This reveals you booted into an old version of Internet Recovery (likely macOS Catalina), which cannot comprehend or fix the newer file system layout from your actual macOS version.Severe File System Corruption: The line Space manager is invalid means the virtual map tracker that assigns physical storage blocks is scrambled. Despite the deceptive "exit code 0", the log states "The volume could not be verified completely".Because the space manager is structurally broken, Disk Utility cannot mount the drive.

You have two options to fix this:Option A: The Data Preservation Route (If you need your files)Do not try to erase anything yet.

Force a Newer Recovery:

Target Disk Mode:

I doubt the recovery will fonction!

Let see tomorow.

I recommend checking the following:

  1. Start your Mac in macOS Recovery and open Disk Utility.
  2. Choose View > Show All Devices.
  3. Select the physical SSD at the top of the sidebar and try erasing the device itself, not just the APFS volume.

There is a menu flashing "File... " but it only half a second, I can't do nothing

My problem is that the recovery partition won't let me use the disk Utility, I only have Boot drive and erase disk showing. And Erase won't work.

I wonder if I can boot from a external disk and repair.
I will test Target mode and try to savage.
I have backup, but it date a few mount back.

As long as you can get into Recovery, you should be able to get to the Startup Security tool in the Utilities menu. You can then enable external boot if you haven't already. I don't know if you can install on an external drive in Recovery, but maybe. If you can boot up from that, you can likely access the Data volume and extract the data. You might even be able to Migrate from the existing Data volume when you are in the Setup Assistant on the external. If you can't, you can migrate from your backup, then manually move anything that wasn't backed up.
