How do I transfer files from a USB 3 Time Machine drive to a new Mac mini using Migration Assistant?

TIME MACHINE vs NEW MAC MINI (and operator) ~ I have been using WD drive as Time Machine that has USB 3. After the initial start up of the new Mini, came back to use Migration Assist to transfer to the new mini. The WD has a USB 3 cable that I have reduced down to USB c. Migration closes down open apps, etc. I select transfer from TM but Migration does not find or recognizes anything. The screen shows it wants to transfer wireless, but WD drive is connected to the mini. Then an error message "The selected source cannot be used for migration. this source contains newer release of macOS. wants me to upgrade”. The new mini has File Share turned on? I am at a loss and I cannot have these files destroyed! Hopefully someone can help this Vintage fella. Computers are not my glass of bourbon! THANK YOU!

Don't panic about your data: your files are 100% safe on that WD hard drive.

The error simply means your old Mac was running a newer version of macOS than what came installed on your new Mac mini from the factory. To fix this, you just need to update the new computer before transferring your files.

Here is how to do it in three straightforward steps:

Skip the Initial Setup

On your current screen, cancel the migration and choose "Not Now" (or to not transfer information right now).

Complete the remaining setup screens by creating a temporary user account (e.g., name it "Test" or "Admin") just to get to the desktop.

Update the Mac mini

Once you are on the desktop, go to System Settings (the gear icon) > General > Software Update.

Download and install any available updates so your Mac mini matches (or exceeds) the software version of your backup.

Run Migration Assistant

Plug your WD drive into the Mac mini's USB-C port.

Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant.

transfer from a Time Machine backup. Your drive will now be recognized without that error message.

During the transfer, if the Mac asks about a conflicting account name, choose the option to "Replace" the temporary user you created in Step 1 with your actual backup data.

Once it finishes, everything will be exactly where you left it. You can finally sit back and enjoy that glass of bourbon

Just attempted the Migration transfer again, still NOTHING. Really don’t know which way to go at this point. Can’t loose this data, many years of work.

Any suggestions truly welcomed. Maybe don’t use WD Element external HD with the new MacMini???
